World Diabetes Day 2009

By November 15, 2009The Log Book

Blue shirts, blue blazers, blue skirts, blue tights, blue glow sticks, blue cake, blue icing, blue sprinkles, blue hair, blue streamers, blue garland, blue lights, blue drinks, blue cups, blue circles, blue falls, blue, blue, blue…

To celebrate WORLD DIABETES DAY on Saturday Novemeber 14th 2009, Slipstreamers took ‘being blue’ to the next level.

People went all out to deck themselves in various shades of the colour which was in no way a reflection of our mood. We were the happiest blue people in all of Niagara, in fact, all of Ontario as we celebrated World Diabetes Day in our own special way.

Niagara Falls was  lit in BLUE in our honour last night, all thanks to CIMer Jen Hanson. So we were out in full force to celebrate!

Slipstreamers came from Toronto, Waterloo and St. Catharines for the event. There was even a surprise visitor all the way from Melbourne, Australia! Dan from HYPOACTIVE, a group of people with Type 1 who promote healthy active living for people with Type 1 (similar to CIM!), made special sneaky arrangements to be in town for the occasion.

Despite our blue crew’s efforts in spreading the world that it was WORLD DIABETES DAY, it was overwhelmingly obvious that the average person on the street had NO CLUE this was our special day. Our outrageous group picture taking in front of the falls caused people to stop and stare (they even took pictures of us!), but not one person we talked to actually knew why we were celebrating until we told them – a clear reminder of the fact that we have a long way to go when it comes to educating the public about diabetes.

We made the most of WDD 2009, the Blue Party lasted well into the wee-hours of the morning and included blue cake, blue hot tubbing, blue dancing, blue karaoke and more!

Thanks to Jen and Sarah for organizing and hosting a fabulous evening!
