Adventure Programs: Teen Canoe Trip #2

July 19, 2017 @ 8:00 am - July 21, 2017 @ 5:00 pm UTC+0

WHAT: Teen Canoe Trip
WHERE: Rain Lake, Algonquin Park, Ontario
WHEN: July 17-19, 2016
WHO: Teens aged 15-18 with Type 1
CONTACT: Peter Vooys, Adventure Coordinator

Whether it’s your first or one-hundredth trip, we want to paddle with you.

Our TeenCanoe Trips in Algonquin Park will pair youth with Type 1 diabetes with CIM mentors to explore the backcountry together, and learn what this whole ‘adult care’ thing is all about. While exploring the lakes and woods of Ontario’s near north, we will discuss the highs and lows of transitioning to adulthood with T1 diabetes.

We will meet in Toronto, on Wednesday morning and travel together up to Algonquin Park. Sorry, parents – we’re leaving you behind in the city for this one! We will start our trip car camping, and spend Thursday paddling and camping. On Friday, we’ll paddle back to the bus, and head back to the city.

The Transition Canoe Trip will cater to a wide range of skill levels and experience from both youth and mentors but will be very limited in space. We will be accepting 10 teen participants. The rest of our trippers will be made up of T1 mentors, nurses, and guides both with Type 1 diabetes and without. (If you would like to canoe with adults, please check out our Annual canoe trip or 5.5er canoe trip.)

Where will we be paddling?

Exact route details coming soon, but here’s what we know so far.

This year, we’ll be heading to enjoy Algonquin Provincial Park. Both paddling and portaging will be included.

We will spend our first night car camping, prepping for an early start on the next morning. Thursday morning we’ll paddle out to our campsite for the night, explore the local beaches, and try our hands at portaging our boats. We’ll sleep on a site at Joe Lake for the night. Friday we will paddle back to our departure point and our waiting bus.

Check out what other Canoe Trippers have to say

The CIM Annual Canoe Trip was an amazing experience. It had been a long time since I had been around that many people with type 1 diabetes. It was such a valuable opportunity to learn from each other, to share tips and experiences, and really, just to have the opportunity to spend time with some incredible people who can relate to living life with Type 1 diabetes.

SamanthaAnnual Canoe Trip 2012

There are many moments in the life of a 5.5er where you wish with every bit of you that you could sincerely empathize with your diabetic loved one - all of the emotional (and literal!) ups and downs. Knowing that Connected in Motion has built such an encouraging and supportive platform for our diabetic counterparts has helped us 5.5ers breathe a little easier. Furthermore, having CIM connect the 5.5ers to others in a similar situation through fabulous canoe trips and social events has really helped us to take great strides in furthering our understanding of an active and healthy life with diabetes. Meeting so many motivated young adults with diabetes is inspiring, and solidifies the notion that a life with diabetes is truly without limits.

Adam5.5er Canoe Trip 2014

After five days of paddling with a bunch of inspiring other Type 1s, I feel rejuvenated physically, emotionally and diabetically. I'm clipping on my pump with a little extra twinkle of pride.
