September 28, 2018 - September 30, 2018

ONTARIO SLIPSTREAM

September 28-30, 2018

Camp Arowhon, Algonquin Park, Ontario

Beyond Type 1 and Connected In Motion invite you to join us for a weekend of community, connection + continuing education, set against a backdrop of fresh air + adventure!

WHAT: Ontario Slipstream
WHERE: Camp Arowhon, Algonquin Park, Ontario
WHEN: September 28-30, 2018
WHO: Adults (18+) with Type 1 diabetes
CONTACT: Jen Hanson, Executive Director (jen@connectedinmotion.ca)

A Slipstream Weekend is an active, social and educational weekend for adults living with Type 1 diabetes. But that explanation sounds so formal… What it really is… is a weekend jam packed full of outdoor adventure, engaging workshops, great food and incredible people. It’s a chance to connect (or reconnect) with like-minded Type 1s, get out and try something new, learn from each others’ experiences, and celebrate the year’s accomplishments – focusing on the positive aspects of what we CAN do with Type 1 diabetes.

Experience a classic “Summer Slipstream” that our Type 1 friends in Ontario (and even farther away!) have come to know and love over the years. This year CIM will host the Ontario Slipstream weekend in partnership with Beyond Type 1, so it’s sure to be better than ever! Get in touch with your rustic, outdoorsy side on a hike or paddle, or kick it back by the campfire for a s’more. The weekend will be full of hands-on, diabetes-themed workshops, as well as group discussions where we can share our collective diabetes knowledge. Don’t miss out!

Silvi Pold

In 2013, she officially “quit her life” to travel and adventure (and is extremely proud of her ability to pack carry-on only no matter the length of the trip - T1D supplies included!) She'll pretty much try anything once and generally laughs the loudest at herself. She was a rider and Social Media / Activities Coordinator on Team Bike Beyond.

She has swam around the island of Manhattan, biked across the U.S. with Team Bike Beyond, and most recently decided a move to Alaska sounded like a good idea. You can always find her with a cup of coffee in hand and living a balanced lifestyle of endurance training and Netflix binging.

Tina has been rocking the world of living with T1 for 25 years. Her connection to the T1 community and outdoor adventures started at Camp Huronda where she worked for 17 summers, the final few as the Assistant Director. She was thrilled at the idea of an organization like CIM coming to fruition after her camp days ended as she realized the strength and knowledge of a T1 community is vital for managing this disease. Tina has some experience in the outdoors, but nothing like what the Rockwall has in store. She has taken on her 25th diaversary as one for celebrating living well with type one and doing big things! She has taken Adam Brown’s writing in Bright Spots and Landmines to heart, with regards to eating and insulin management and is currently training for a half marathon with CIM in Ottawa on May 27. The Rockwall Trail will be the grand finale! She is the Executive Director at Montessori Academy of London, where she tries to get on every outdoor field trip as possible, and lives in the city with her husband Kary and 9 year old son William. Together they share a passion for fishing and baseball.

Marcia Ross

2018 Adventure Team, T1D since 1991

Marcia has been living with T1 for 28 years. Well, living with, but not necessarily admitting to. For many of those 28 she has been hauling it behind her as a jangling sack of disparate demands that she sometimes forgets to set aside time for.

CIM has helped with that – so she claims – a lot. She found out about CIM in 2017 after her diabetic team got her to read a book on diabetic burnout, which informed her that she was doing well on 3 of the 4 main coping areas but sucked at community. So she searched online for community, found CIM, and encountered it by campfire light, 13 persons strong, having arrived late to the annual canoe trip. Then the daylight came, and she’s never looked back.

Marcia is the mother of a 3 and grandmother of 1. She’s an ardent cottager, racquet sports player, and lover of anything outdoors, ideally near or in water. She works as a marketer, writing content and articulating strong opinions on strategy, for a small set of clients of whom she is very fond.

Anissa Gamble

2017 Adventure Team Member, Athlete, T1D since 2002

Anissa Gamble was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick where she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 8. Pursuing competitive hockey, she attended Appleby College in Oakville, Ontario for high school, and went on to play Division 1 NCAA hockey at Robert Morris University (RMU) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While at RMU, she majored in biology with a concentration in pre-medicine and minored in chemistry. She recently completed her masters in experimental surgery at the University of Alberta studying islet cell transplantation for Type 1 diabetes under the wing of Dr. Shapiro.

Saturday @ 7:15pm - Hear from some Slipstreamers who have been on epic adventures in sport and backcountry exploration. Join the CIM Adventure Team and Team Bike Beyond in a panel discussion. Bring your questions!

Gamble will be joining us for the weekend to tackle all things social media.

Aaron Johnson

Photograher, T1D since xxx

Bio coming soon.

AJ will be joining us to document our weekend through his photography skills!

Walt Drennan

Team Bike Beyond, T1D since xxx

Walt was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2000 at the age of 12. Despite having T1D for over half his life Walt didn’t really come to terms with it until after completing a cross country charity cycling tour in 2012. Cycling over 4,000 miles from South Carolina to California in 80 days with no Type 1 complications made Walter realize that the only thing holding him back from doing everything he wanted was himself. He’s been cycling ever since and completed a second cross-country charity cycling tour from Maryland to Oregon in 2014. In 2017, he was team coordinator for Bike Beyond.

SESSIONS:

Heather Gomez

Community Outreach Coordinator @ Connected in Motion, T1D since 2006.

When Heather was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 16, Connected in Motion was one of the first organizations she was introduced to as a "new member" of the diabetes community in Toronto. Soon after, Heather moved to Nova Scotia to attend Acadia University, later graduating with a Kinesiology degree. For the past three years, Heather has been working with a number of diabetes organizations in the community, coordinating programs for youth and adults with T1D. She has also stayed busy teaching all varieties of fitness classes (and has a special love for aquafitness!).

Dana Howe

Communications Manager @ Beyond Type 1, T1D since 2002.

Dana was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2002 at the age of 8. As the Communications Manager at Beyond Type 1, Dana strives to use social and digital media to amplify the voices of the diabetes community and build community around living well with Type 1. Dana studied Biology and Community Health as an undergraduate and went on to complete an MS in Health Communication from Tufts University. In the past, Dana has worked as a communications specialist with major hospitals as well as small nonprofits on topics ranging from cancer to pediatric device innovation. When she’s not favoriting your tweets, you can find her skiing, biking or drinking coffee.

Hank Devos

Film Maker, T1D since 1994

When he isn’t daydreaming about ripping down a mountain in knee deep powder, you can find Hank behind a camera. His passion for film and media began when he was a young child– seeing blockbuster films had him hooked. Whether it’s on a mountain, or inside a studio, the need to tell a story through images consumes his time. His love for the outdoors and filmmaking collide head-on in his role with Connected in Motion as their video producer. Hank is the man and the mind behind the CIM Adventure Team video project.

Hank will be documenting our weekend to create the Ontario Slipstream Highlight Reel.

Jen Hanson

Executive Director @ Connected in Motion, Type 1 Since 1987.

Jen has grown up with Type 1 diabetes. Diagnosed in 1987, she has never let diabetes stop her from pursuing her passion. Jen’s early beginnings as a campfire-loving, bug-catching, mud-puddle-jumping, tree-climbing tot sparked in her a love for the natural world that has been fostered and frown into a full-blown passion for everything outdoors. Jen has degrees in Kinesiology and Education and specializes in Outdoor and Experiential Health education. Jen has worked with Connected In Motion for 10 years and is now CIM's Executive Director.

Nicole is a recent graduate from Kent State University with a degree in Human Development and Family Studies concentrating in Child and Youth Development and a Non-Profit Studies minor. Now the intern at Beyond Type 1, she has been able to put all of her past years of experience in non-profit work and as a diabetes camp counselor towards a non-profit organization that means a lot to her.

Erin Randall

Slipstream Coordinator @ Connected in Motion, 5.5er since ∞

Supporting close family members with T1D for the past 30+ years, Erin has always considered herself an ally to the T1D community. Her strong desire to educate and connect with the T1D community led Erin to work at Camp Huronda for many summers and to pursue a career in nursing. Erin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, as well as being a Certified Diabetes Educator. Not only does Erin work as the Slipstream Coordinator, she also works as a nurse educator at the paediatric diabetes clinic at Markham Stouffville Hospital. FAQs

What do I need to bring with me?
You can check out our program packing lists, here. If there are any special items you’ll need, you’ll hear from us via email 2 weeks before the event. We’ll expect that you’ll bring your own diabetes supplies, clothing, and toiletries. We’ll provide all of the outdoor adventure equipment, a bed to sleep in, food… Just like camp… for adults!

What is the vibe of the weekend? Is this like a conference?
Not really! Here, at Connected in Motion, we wanted to get away from the typical ‘conference’ style of learning. We want to have meaningful conversations, hands-on learning, and actually get outside and put into practice some of the strategies for living well with diabetes that we’ve all learned along the way. You can expect a mix between indoor learning sessions – sometimes we’ll bring in special guests to share with us, other times we’ll run group workshops – and outdoor adventure sessions – don’t worry, we’ll let you define adventure! Think, camp for adults!

I’m not super fit. I’ve seen some of CIM’s photos and videos – everything looks epic. I don’t know if I’ll be able to handle Slipstream!
Of course you will! The CIM team are trained educators and adventure guides. We work hard to make sure that everyone experiences success, defined on your own terms. Whether that’s climbing a mountain, or just strolling to the trailhead, we’ll mould the experience to suit all ability levels. We’ll encourage you to step to the edge of your comfort zone, but we won’t push you off!

I’ve never been to something like this before – Can I bring a friend?
Slipstream is built just for adults with Type 1 diabetes – Do you have a friend with diabetes? Then, sure! Bring them along! We realize how scary it can be to jump into something like this alone and we commend everyone who has pushed themselves and join the community solo – We are proud of you! We know it’s not easy! We’ll do our best to help make joining the community easy for everyone – We’ll help arrange carpooling, make introductions throughout the weekend, plan ice breakers – whatever we need to do to make you feel welcomed. Come join us!

I have a special dietary need – celiac, dairy sensitivity, allergy – Can the venue accommodate me?
We’ll be working closely with the venue to ensure that we can meet the dietary needs of all of our Slipstreamers. Food is one of the highlights of a Slipstream experience! The venue knows that we will be a group with diverse needs and will be prepared to meet the needs of our crew. We’ll also work closely with you, if you’d prefer, to make sure that you’re comfortable with the food situation. We don’t want food to be a stress!

Will there be low supplies on site, or do I need to pack my own?
Low supplies will be plentiful! We’ll supply juice boxes, glucose tabs, granola bars, etc. As always, if you have your own favorites, please bring them along! (Maybe they will become our favourites, too!)

I see a lot of cool outdoor adventure activities listed. Do I need any of my own equipment?
Nope! For every activity offered at Slipstream, gear will be provided – It’s included in your registration fee!

Check out what other Slipstreamers have to say

I had participated in many diabetes-related events as a teenager but this was my first one with an adult group. It was a little intimidating at first but turned out to be an incredible experience! We all became one big families who was there to support one another and I left that weekend feeling refreshed, with a bunch of new friends and fun memories. Thank you for convincing me to come out, CIM! I made the right decision.

KatrinaSummer Slipstream 2016

This was my first experience with the CIM community. I have been diabetic type 1 for the past 36 years deal with this on my own. I knew there were other people who were as active as I was but didn't know anyone other than a close friend who lives in Ottawa area. The experience was so uplifting that I was not the only one and having discussions about the ups and downs on a very personal level. I am ready to do more active sessions with this community soon I hope.

MichelSummer Slipstream 2016

Although it's hard to put into words, being surrounded for an entire weekend with other T1's that totally "get it" from every finger prick, every high, every low, every carb count, every step i take in this T1 journey is beyond priceless!

GayleSoCal Slipstream 2016

I use to think and believe I was the only diabetic in the world. I really had no one to talk to about problems relating to diabetes. I attended the summer slipstream the presentations that were provided were educational and very informative. Not only did I meet new and amazing people but I met great life long friends and really a new family. It has turned my world right around my lowest A1C in 16 years and the best health I have been in 16 years because It put me in the right mind frame to conquer diabetes. This slipstream allowed me to also ask the questions that I always thought were "stupid" or everyone should know but I just didn't I would highly recommend it to anyone and in fact, I already have! Thanks CIM
