WHAT: USA SoCal Slipstream
WHEN: October 28th – 30th 2016
WHERE: Camp Emerald Bay, Catalina Island, Southern California, USA
WHO: Adults (21+) with Type 1 diabetes
A Slipstream Weekend is an active, social and educational weekend for adults (21+) living with Type 1 diabetes. But that explanation sounds so formal… What it really is… is a weekend jam packed full of outdoor adventure, engaging workshops, great food and incredible people. It’s a chance to connect (or reconnect) with like-minded Type 1s, get out and try something new, learn from each others’ experiences, and celebrate the year’s accomplishments – focusing on the positive aspects of what we CAN do with Type 1 diabetes.
This year, CIM will be hosting it’s second USA Slipstream weekend in Southern California on Catalina Island! Join us to relax on the shores Camp Emerald Bay’s private beach, participate in some great workshops, get outside and get moving.
In recognition of Tandem Diabetes Care’s sponsorship, Connected in Motion is extending a special $25 off discount to Tandem Pump Users who register for Slipstream SoCal. Get in touch with your local Tandem Rep for the coupon code.
What do I need to bring with me?
The CIM team will forward a packing list with all of the details you need to be packed appropriately. You can expect to receive this 2 weeks prior to the event. We’ll expect that you’ll bring your own diabetes supplies, clothing, and toiletries. We’ll provide all of the outdoor adventure equipment, a bed to sleep in, food… Just like camp… for adults!
What time are we heading over to the island and when are we coming back?
We’ll be taking the 4:20pm ferry on October 28th from the San Pedro Ferry terminal and heading back on the 4:20pm ferry from Two Harbors. We’ll be arriving back to San Pedro at 6:00pm on Sunday October 30th.
I’m flying in to attend the event. Are there other ferry options?
There is one earlier ferry option on Sunday morning with very limited seating. Please get in touch with us to discuss! email@example.com
What is the vibe of the weekend? Is this like a conference?
Not really! Here, at Connected in Motion, we wanted to get away from the typical ‘conference’ style of learning. We want to have meaningful conversations, hands-on learning, and actually get outside and put into practice some of the strategies for living well with diabetes that we’ve all learned along the way. You can expect a mix between indoor learning sessions – sometimes we’ll bring in special guests to share with us, other times we’ll run group workshops – and outdoor adventure sessions – don’t worry, we’ll let you define adventure! Think, camp for adults!
I’m not super fit. I’ve seen some of CIM’s photos and videos – everything looks epic. I don’t know if I’ll be able to handle Slipstream!
Of course you will! The CIM team are trained educators and adventure guides. We work hard to make sure that everyone experiences success, defined on your own terms. Whether that’s climbing a mountain, or just strolling to the trailhead, we’ll mould the experience to suit all ability levels. We’ll encourage you to step to the edge of your comfort zone, but we won’t push you off!
I’ve never been to something like this before – Can I bring a friend?
Summer Slipstream is built just for adults with Type 1 diabetes – Do you have a friend with diabetes? Then, sure! Bring them along! We realize how scary it can be to jump into something like this alone and we commend everyone who has pushed themselves and join the community solo – We are proud of you! We know it’s not easy! We’ll do our best to help make joining the community easy for everyone – We’ll help arrange carpooling, make introductions throughout the weekend, plan icebreakers – whatever we need to do to make you feel welcomed. Come join us!
I have a special dietary need – celiac, dairy sensitivity, allergy – Can the venue accommodate me?
We’ll be working closely with the venue at Camp Emerald Bay to ensure that we can meet the dietary needs of all of our Slipstreamers. Food is one of the highlights of a Slipstream experience! The venue knows that we will be a group with diverse needs and will be prepared to meet the needs of our crew. We’ll also work closely with you, if you’d prefer, to make sure that you’re comfortable with the food situation. We don’t want food to be a stress!
Will there be low supplies on site, or do I need to pack my own?
Low supplies will be plentiful! We’ll supply juice boxes, glucose tabs, granola bars, etc. As always, if you have your own favorites, please bring them along! (Maybe they will become our favourites, too!)
I see a lot of cool outdoor adventure activities listed. Do I need any of my own equipment?
Nope! For every activity offered at Slipstream, gear will be provided – It’s included in your registration fee!
Do you have a questions that you’d like answered? Send them to firstname.lastname@example.org with SoCal Slipstream FAQ in the subject line and we’ll get your questions answered!
Check out what other Slipstreamers have to say!
Winter Slipstream weekends are always inspiring. The limits of my comfort zone have always expanded. Being surrounded by people who know how to gently persuaded me to accomplish what I though I couldn't is a fantastic experience. A experience that always happens at Slipstream weekendsWinter Slipstream Participant, 2015
I have never experienced anything like Slipstream. The meaning behind the name describes exactly what I felt while spending an entire weekend with other type 1’s. We were all riding in the Slipstream, and while we were there, having type 1 diabetes was the new “normal”. It meant that I wasn’t the only one who had to work a little extra hard to live my life everyday, and experiencing this made it seem as if that burden was lifted altogether.Western Slipstream Participant, 2014
It's hard to put into words what a weekend with like minded people can do for the soul. Sometimes diabetes can be a lonely solo voyage and its hard to let people into the emotional experience, so wonderful to meet people with such a vest for life living with what you live with on a daily basis. helps bring perspective to your day to day struggles when you know you are not alone.PNW Slipstream Participant, 2013
