The Slipstream
Connected in Motion creates a ‘slipstream’ for people living with diabetes.
slip•stream\slip-strēm\ noun:
1. the airstream generating reduced air pressure and forward suction directly behind
a rapidly moving person with diabetes
2. to ride in the slipstream of a fast-moving person with diabetes
3. the momentum that created Connected in Motion
In 2008, Rob and Chloe had the opportunity to join a group of people with Type 1 in a cycling race in Australia. Riding in behind others to reduce air resistance, we experienced drafting in a slipstream for the first time. Chloe quickly realized that spending time with other people with Type 1 diabetes resulted in a similar phenomenon.
Although she was working hard all weekend to keep her blood sugars in check (testing her blood over 30 times, adjusting the basal rate on her pump, eating enough to keep fuelled, dealing with highs, topping up lows) it was as though suddenly the resistance of living with diabetes had eased. EVERYONE around her had diabetes, EVERYONE was managing their blood sugar and EVERYONE was pushing their physical limits. Before she knew it, she was cruising in their slipstream.
The experience of meeting other active, fit and outgoing Type 1’s who deal with the same struggles she did, every minute of every day, was like nothing she had felt before.
Chloe and Rob decided then that they needed to create a slipstream here in Canada.
