Let’s celebrate the year’s accomplishments and focus on the positive aspects of what we CAN do with Type 1 diabetes.

We do our best to accommodate special dietary requests, and our team works closely with the venue to ensure they are aware of any food allergies or special diets in the group. If you have a special dietary concern, please be sure to let us know well in advance so we can find out what accommodations or substitutions the venue is able to offer.

Camp Caribou is strictly nut-free. Please leave all nut products at home and double-check any snacks you DO bring to ensure they do not contain nuts.

Please note — the camp will do its best to accommodate individual dietary requirements, but may not be able to cater to every request. She spends her days working in dentistry as a Level 2 assistant and treatment coordinator in Uxbridge.

Tiana Cooks

BT1 Staff

Tiana was diagnosed with T1D March of 2014. Shortly after being diagnosed, she attended her first T1D gala, since then she has loved dedicating her time to helping others with Type One. She has significant experience organizing camps, walks, and community events. You can always count her in for a workout or new adventures outside of the gym. Traveling and meeting new people are two guaranteed experiences that will bring a smile to her face.

BJ Garceau

CIM Staff & Speaker

Bobbi-Jean (BJ) Garceau was diagnosed in 1995 at the age of 12. She currently wears a Medtronic 670g insulin pump with CGM. She works in health care with the surgical team in Bangor, Maine, and has a history working in mental health, substance abuse, crisis intervention, music, and fitness. BJ became the first T1D MMA fighter in New England! She adores animals, and is a vegetarian who loves to cook!

Kerri Sparling

Speaker

Kerri is a passionate advocate for all-things diabetes. She is the creator and author of Six Until Me, one of the first and most widely-read diabetes patient blogs, reaching a global audience of patients and caregivers. Her first book, Balancing Diabetes (Spry Publishing), looks at type 1 diabetes in the context of “real life.” Kerri has lived with diabetes for 30 years. She has experienced a full childhood, the teen years, the college experience, and now pregnancy and parenting, with diabetes along for the ride. Kerri aims to spread a message of hope versus fear through the power of social media, advocacy, and storytelling.

Hank Devos

CIM Film + Media Manager, Event Videographer

When he isn’t day dreaming about ripping down a mountain in knee deep powder, you can find Hank behind a camera. His passion for film and media began when he was a young child– seeing blockbuster films had him hooked. Whether it’s on a mountain, or inside a studio, the need to tell a story through images consumes his time. His love for the outdoors and filmmaking collide head on in his role with Connected in Motion as their video producer.

Eleanor Medley

CIM Staff

Eleanor attended the University of Toronto for her Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry. She is currently pursuing her Master of Public Health degree in Environmental Health Sciences. Eleanor has had Type 1 diabetes since she was four years old, and her younger sister also has T1D! Eleanor loves being outside and in her free time, you can find her dog walking, swimming, or listening to music and podcasts. She has attended Virtual Slipstream, interned with Connected in Motion, and is excited to be helping out in-person this spring!

Ciara Stevens

Speaker

Ciara has been living with T1D for over 20 years. She is positive that her lived experience has led her to her dream job working as a CDE. She is passionate about the power that community holds, and has helped to develop a sense of the same amongst people living with diabetes in Nova Scotia. She aims to spend time outside of her comfort zone and to live life fully. Ultimately, she hopes to help others to do their own version of the same. She is a self-proclaimed fitness and wellness nerd who especially enjoys spending time at the lake, cycling, and swinging her insulin pump around on the dance floor. Recently Ciara has become especially interested in women’s health and mental health in those living with T1D.

Erika Szumel

BT1 Staff

Erika has been living with Type 1 Diabetes since 2000 and has strived to be an advocate for the diabetes community ever since. Every November she shares her thoughts and photos on living with T1D on Facebook to help raise awareness for the disease. Erika earned her BA in Visual & Sound Media at Seton Hall University in New Jersey and began her career as a TV producer. Living at the Jersey shore, Erika is a lover of the little things, the ocean, and pork roll.

Lissie Poyner

Speaker

Lissie is a Holistic Health Coach for people with Type 1 diabetes. Her journey with diabetes began when she was a freshman in college. She was one of those people who had no idea what the realities of this disease were until she was sitting in the doctor's office being given the lifelong diagnosis. They sent her off with a few insulin pens and carb ratios and simply told her to use these tools to manage it - but she couldn't help but think that there should be more to living with a chronic disease like this. It was after graduation that she finally decided to show up for her body. She enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) and learned as much as she could about caring for her body as whole. It was only then that she was able to achieve her lowest A1C - ever - and bring her ulcerative colitis into remission.

Lala Jackson

BT1 Staff

Working in communications and content strategy for more than a decade across for- and non-profit companies, Lala has been in the diabetes non-profit space for the past six years. A bit of a nomad, she grew up primarily bouncing between Hawaii and Washington state and graduated from the University of Miami in Florida with a communications degree focused in advertising. She is a published non-fiction author who is currently trying to teach herself how to write fiction. You can usually find her reading, preferably on a beach. She has lived with diabetes since 1997.

Charlotte Drury

Photographer & Speaker

Charlotte Drury was a member of the 2020 Olympic Team for the sport of Trampoline. She was diagnosed as a Type 1 Diabetic just 3 months before the Tokyo Olympics and only 3 weeks before the start of Olympic Trials. In the year since she’s been diagnosed she’s been determined to not let her diagnosis hold her back from living the adventurous life she’s always dreamed of. Charlotte works as a freelance photographer and loves to travel, cook and go on crazy adventures. She currently lives in Brooklyn, NY with her girlfriend and 6 plants.

Lisa deMolitor

Speaker

Lisa is a Dietitian and Certified diabetes Educator who has spent most of her career in the Kootenays of British Columbia; she has now returned to her maritime roots and is now enjoying the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. She feels honored to have taken part in Diabetes Camp on both Canadian coasts. She loves talking about food, thinking about food and eating food and is also excited about diabetes tech (learning and troubleshooting). She had 3 kids in 2 years (crazy but fun); she and her partner Nick enjoy getting them all out into the bike trails, hiking trails and canoe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Slipstream Weekend, anyway?

A Slipstream Weekend is an active, social and educational weekend for adults living with Type 1 diabetes. But that explanation sounds so formal… What it really is… is a weekend jam packed full of outdoor adventure, engaging workshops, great food and incredible people. It’s a chance to connect (or re-connect) with like-minded Type 1s, get out and try something new, learn from each others’ experiences, and celebrate the year’s accomplishments – focusing on the positive aspects of what we CAN do with Type 1 diabetes.

What goes on at a Slipstream? Do you have a schedule ready?

Think of Slipstream as a choose your own adventure experience. You’ll have the chance to build your own schedule to create an experience that works best for you and your goals for the weekend.

When the schedule is ready, it will be added to this page under the Schedule At A Glance.

Who can attend a Slipstream Weekend?

Slipstream Weekends are available to people aged 18+ who are living with Type 1 diabetes. We have had participants from ages 18 to 82 and have no upper age restrictions as long as you are willing to bring a smile and a love for being active.

We do offer programs where your friend or partner living without Type 1 can join through our 5.5er series! Check out our 5.5er Slipstream or 5.5er Canoe Trip.

Getting There? Accommodations? Food? Packing List?

Oops, you’ve scrolled too far! All of that information is answered further up the page. Click here!

What is the vibe of the weekend? Is this like a conference?

Not really! Here, at Connected in Motion, we wanted to get away from the typical ‘conference’ style of learning. We want to have meaningful conversations, hands-on learning, and actually get outside and put into practice some of the strategies for living well with diabetes that we’ve all learned along the way. You can expect a mix between indoor learning sessions – sometimes we’ll bring in special guests to share with us, other times we’ll run group workshops – and outdoor adventure sessions – don’t worry, we’ll let you define adventure! Think, camp for adults!

I'm not super fit. I don't know if I'll be able to handle this event.

Of course you will! The CIM team are trained educators and adventure guides. We work hard to make sure that everyone experiences success, defined on your own terms. Whether that’s climbing a mountain, or just strolling to the trailhead, we’ll mould the experience to suit all ability levels. We’ll encourage you to step to the edge of your comfort zone, but we won’t push you off!

I have a special dietary need: celiac, dairy sensitivity, allergy, etc. Can the venue accommodate me?

We do our best to accommodate special dietary requests, and our team works closely with the venue to ensure they are aware of any food allergies or special diets in the group. If you have a special dietary concern, please be sure to let us know well in advance so we can find out what accommodations or substitutions the venue is able to offer.

Will there be low supplies on site, or do I need to pack my own?

Low supplies will be plentiful, but it’s always a good idea to bring your own! We’ll supply juice boxes, glucose tabs, granola bars, etc. As always, if you have your own favourites, please bring them along! (Maybe they will become our favourites, too!)

I see a lot of cool outdoor adventure activities listed. Do I need any of my own equipment?

Nope! For every activity offered at Slipstream, gear will be provided. It’s included in your registration fee!

What's included in my registration?

  • Shared accommodation (usually bunk-bed style)
  • All meals and snacks (Friday evening dinner through Sunday Lunch)
  • Outdoor programming (past examples include: rock climbing, challenge course, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, swimming, etc)
  • CIM-specific programming

What is NOT included?

  • Transportation to and from the program venue is not included
  • Diabetes supplies (make sure to bring everything you need for yourself!)

I'd love to join, but don't think I can afford it.

We never want someone to miss out on a CIM experience, simply because they can’t afford it. The purpose of the CIM Program Subsidy is to eliminate financial barriers for those who want to attend a Slipstream weekend or Adventure program. These subsidies are possible because of the fundraising by past CIM Adventure Team members.
To apply for a subsidy, please complete a CIM Program Subsidy Application.

What is the refund policy?

We offer full refunds for Slipstream program registrations until 30 days before the start of each program. Unfortunately, CIM is unable to refund Slipstreams registrations that are canceled less than 30 days from the start of the program due to arrangements with our host venues. For cancellations more than 30 days before the program, a refund (minus an administration fee) will be issued. To request a cancellation, please email info@connectedinmotion.ca.

What are the event protocols with regards to COVID?

A complete outline of our event protocols can be found on our Slipstream COVID Protocols page.

I still have a question I need answered.

Still have questions? Send them to info@connectedinmotion.ca with Slipstream FAQ in the subject line and we’ll get your questions answered!

What A Slipstream Weekend Looks Like

Don’t believe us? Just watch!

What Slipstreamers Had To Say

I had participated in many diabetes-related events as a teenager but this was my first one with an adult group. It was a little intimidating at first but turned out to be an incredible experience! We all became one big families who was there to support one another and I left that weekend feeling refreshed, with a bunch of new friends and fun memories. Thank you for convincing me to come out, CIM! I made the right decision.

KatrinaSummer Slipstream 2016

This was my first experience with the CIM community. I have been diabetic type 1 for the past 36 years deal with this on my own. I knew there were other people who were as active as I was but didn't know anyone other than a close friend who lives in Ottawa area. The experience was so uplifting that I was not the only one and having discussions about the ups and downs on a very personal level. I am ready to do more active sessions with this community soon I hope.

MichelSummer Slipstream 2016

Although it's hard to put into words, being surrounded for an entire weekend with other T1's that totally "get it" from every finger prick, every high, every low, every carb count, every step i take in this T1 journey is beyond priceless!

GayleSoCal Slipstream 2016

I use to think and believe I was the only diabetic in the world. I really had no one to talk to about problems relating to diabetes. I attended the summer slipstream the presentations that were provided were educational and very informative. Not only did I meet new and amazing people but I met great life long friends and really a new family. It has turned my world right around my lowest A1C in 16 years and the best health I have been in 16 years because It put me in the right mind frame to conquer diabetes. This slipstream allowed me to also ask the questions that I always thought were "stupid" or everyone should know but I just didn't I would highly recommend it to anyone and in fact, I already have! Thanks CIM
