Get In The Slipstream

Connect With Type 1s

Many of our participants have never met another person living with Type 1.

Experiential Education

We love our doctors, but we're hands-on and learn through experience in the real world.

Relax & Recharge

A weekend away from the hustle of daily life, with the opportunity to focus on yourself.

Leave Inspired

By the time you leave Slipstream, you'll feel a renewed passion to conquer your T1.

Why did we create this?

We needed something between doctors visits.

It took 10 years for CIM’s founder, Chloe, to meet another person with Type 1 diabetes. She had been flying solo with her diabetes – celebrating the successes alone and navigating the challenges by herself. During a backpacking trip in Australia in 2006, everything changed. Chloe met a group of cyclists who not only were all living with Type 1 diabetes, but they were thriving amongst a community of people who ‘got it’. These cyclists were not only experiencing the phenomenon of a Slipstream through cycling, but in their diabetes too.

So we built it.

The Slipstream.

Chloe returned back to Canada and, in 2008, Connected in Motion was born, creating a place for adults to connect and feel the power of community. In 2009, Connected in Motion launched it’s first Slipstream – a winter weekend retreat in northern Ontario attended by 27 people living with Type 1 diabetes. By the end of the weekend, they were asking for the next one and we’ve been growing and evolving the Slipstream ever since.

A Slipstream Weekend is an active, social and educational weekend for adults living with Type 1 diabetes. But that explanation sounds so formal… What it really is… is a weekend jam-packed full of outdoor adventure, engaging workshops, great food and incredible people. It’s a chance to connect with like-minded Type 1s, get out and try something new and learn from each others’ experiences.

Simply put, this is diabetes camp for adults!

Can You Show Me?

This all sounds great but I need to see it to believe it!

What Slipstreamers Had To Say

“I’m excited to get outside more and continue doing the things I love without letting diabetes limit me. I’m no longer alone on this journey. I have made many friends that are in the same situation I am, and we can share our experiences, stories, and tips for managing diabetes while this pursuing our interests.”

I had participated in many diabetes-related events as a teenager but this was my first one with an adult group. It was a little intimidating at first but turned out to be an incredible experience! We all became one big family who was there to support one another and I left that weekend feeling refreshed, with a bunch of new friends and fun memories.

Although it’s hard to put into words, being surrounded for an entire weekend with other T1’s that totally “get it” from every finger prick, every high, every low, every carb count, every step i take in this T1 journey is beyond priceless!

I have a million questions.

Cool, let’s try to answer some of them.

Accommodations

When attending a Slipstream, you can expect to stay in shared bunk-style accommodation. All accommodations offer electricity in the cabins for all of your diabetes-charging needs. When CIM is searching for venues, we look for options that are comfortable with adults including easy access to bathrooms and showers (in the cabins, whenever possible), climate controlled spaces, and reasonable sized beds.

Food

We believe in eating healthy and ensure that our attendees are well-fed throughout the weekend. At a typical Slipstream you might find eggs and French Toast for breakfast, grilled chicken wraps and a salad bar for lunch, with flank steak and veggies for dinner. Juice and water are provided with every meal, but it wouldn’t be out of place to bring a few adult beverages for yourself. We do our best to accommodate special dietary requests, and our team works closely with the venue to ensure they are aware of any food allergies or special diets in the group. Most of the venues we use are nut-free.

Activities

The available activities are dependent on the facilities we are using and the season, but a typical Slipstream weekend could include swimming, canoeing, high ropes, ice skating, snowshoeing, cooking challenges, presentations and camp fires.

A Typical Weekend

Guests will typically arrive on a Friday afternoon and unpack into their accommodations. Everyone will meet for some ice breakers and get to know each other. Dinner is served with a few activities to follow. Saturday is an action packed day, full of choose your own adventure and usually ends around the camp fire. Sunday morning features an activity and everyone departs around lunch. Be sure to visit our actual event pages for a more detailed schedule.
