Spring has been upon us for a whole month now. Yet mother nature isn’t quite on the same page as the rest of us. As the snow was falling on Saturday April 20 throughout Southern Ontario, the Connected in Motion community came together to forget about the sub-zero temperatures and spend an afternoon in the sand at the Fourth Annual Bumps & Pumps Beach Volleyball Tournament.
With 15 teams, over 120 players, 5 volunteers, a handful of cheerers, and an entire warehouse of sand, the tournament was kicked off with some fun-filled round robin play. Each team played up to SEVEN 20-minute games. The day was action-packed, to say the least!
Unique to this year’s tournament was the exclusive use of Beach Blast’s space. Having the entire facility to ourselves meant that we had more space to spread out, relax, and, let’s be honest, take over. More than that, though, it meant that every individual you met whether it be on the courts, at the beach-side bar, or in the bunker during a BYE was also a member of the Type 1 community. Everyone in the facility had a connection to Type 1. We were thrilled to see new friends being made, old friends catching up, and the little diabetes tid-bits – tips, tricks, lessons, hilarious stories – being shared around every corner.
Following the regular round-robin play, teams were seeded and set out to compete in the Division A and Division B play-off finals. There was no shortage of bumping, setting, and even a bit of spiking as teams battled (and laughed) their way through the final rounds of play.
A huge congratulations to the Division A Champions, Sets on the Beach – reigning champions second year in a row! A special shout-out to T1 Tayler Michaelson for bringing it on the courts.
A shout out to Lindsey Vivian and the Blockbuster Hits for rocking the finals and coming out as the Division A Runner’s Up!
Coming out on top of the B Division championship was the Scrat-Tackers, welcomed back for the third year in a row. Congrats to this group of Camp Huronda Alumni!
And a shout-out to the Mixed Lancets team who walked away with the B Division Runner Up title after just having met a mere hours before.
THANK YOU to Animas Canada for their support as Bronze Sponsors of the Bumps & Pumps Beach Volleyball Tournament.
