The Adventure Team

The CIM Adventure Team, founded in 2016, is a team of exceptional individuals from the Type 1 diabetes community who come together to redefine life with Type 1 diabetes, achieve personal goals, and raise money for CIM to help more people realize life without limits.

A T1D Experience To Push Your Limits

CIM’s Adventure Programs help people experience the backcountry.

No experience necessary – let’s just get you the tools, skills, and experience you need to explore the outdoors with Type 1 diabetes. By the time 2016 rolled around, however, we had become connected with so many inspiring adventurers with Type 1 diabetes from around the world and decided to do what we do best – connect them.

The CIM Adventure Team provides the opportunity for people to take on a next-level adventure and use their stories to help make CIM programs accessible to even more people. To date, CIM Adventure Team alumni have raised over $175,000 to help more people connect with the diabetes community.

This is epic. How do I join the team?

Each year, people from around the world apply to be a member of CIM’s Adventure Team.

Applications are accepted in January. A selection committee reviews each and every application and makes recommendations to help build a diverse team, announced in February each year. As part of their application, Adventure Team members answer questions to help us understand what makes them unique, what living with diabetes means to them and what are the biggest challenges they’ve overcome. The selection committee is made up of over 20 individuals from the outdoor adventure, education, and diabetes industries who come together to build a diverse (in terms of diabetes story, background, experience) and inspiring group of individuals. If there’s one thing we’ve learned, there is no shortage of inspiration in this community.

What happens if I get selected?

Once Adventure Team Members are selected, the training begins!

The team will join together on monthly video conferencing calls to get to know one another, to learn skills for successful fundraising, to stay on track with training, and to gain all of the knowledge needed to tackle the trail. Each team member sets up their own fundraising page and crafts their own story to tell the community what they’re doing and why it’s important. As the trek draws closer, the team will go over packing lists, trip menus, and travel logistics, typically landing near the starting point of the adventure 2-3 days before setting out. All funds are raised before the trek start date so team members can focus on tackling the trail ahead.

The Adventure Team trek explores different areas each year. We look to travel to remote, wild, beautiful areas.

2016

Long Range Traverse

35km – 4 days – Very remote, no marked trails, varied terrain, steep ascents, and weather considerations. Don’t let the distance fool you.

2017

North Coast Trail

79km – 6 days – Northern tip of Vancouver Island, extremely challenging and varied terrain, incredibly remote, potential animal encounters

2018

Rockwall Trail

54km – 5 days – Due to serious wildfire activity in the Kootenays the Adventure Team had to divert its trek to the Icefields Parkway in Jasper, completing 75km of glacier approaches, pass summits, and snow-covered trails

2019

Chilkoot Trail

52km – 5 days – historical significance, international border crossing, serious pass summit expected to take 12 hours, mid-way through the hike

2022

Fryatt Valley Trail

44km – 5 days – historical trading route sites, challenging river fords, and a crucial mountain pass taking a full day to summit, strategically positioned at the trail’s midpoint

2023

Teton Crest Trail

60km – 5 days – diverse canyon terrains, panoramic mountain shelf views, rugged high-altitude trails, serene lakeside camping, and abundant wildlife encounters

Over 85% of people living with Type 1 diabetes are adults, but support for this community has traditionally been very sparse.

Connected in Motion is changing that through the funds raised and inspiration shared by the CIM Adventure Team. Being a member of the team is so much more than just going on your dream trip or raising funds for a charity. Being a member of the team gives you a platform to inspire those in your own networks and community while redefining what it is to live with Type 1 diabetes.
