Slipstreams: 2017 Atlantic Slipstream – Nova Scotia

October 13, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - October 15, 2017 @ 2:00 pm UTC+0

WHAT: Atlantic Slipstream Weekend
WHERE: Brigadoon Village Camp, Kentville, NS
WHEN: Friday, October 13th – Sunday, October 15th, 2017
WHO: Adults (19+) with Type 1 diabetes
CONTACT: Erin Randall, Slipstream Coordinator (erin@connectedinmotion.ca)

A Slipstream Weekend is an active, social and educational weekend for adults living with Type 1 diabetes. But that explanation sounds so formal… What it really is… is a weekend jam packed full of outdoor adventure, engaging workshops, great food and incredible people. It’s a chance to connect (or reconnect) with like-minded Type 1s, get out and try something new, learn from each others’ experiences, and celebrate the year’s accomplishments – focusing on the positive aspects of what we CAN do with Type 1 diabetes.

This year, CIM will be hosting our very first Atlantic Slipstream Weekend at Brigadoon Village. We are so excited to have the chance to meet and connect with the amazing Atlantic Type 1 community! You’ll have the chance to get out on the water, relax around the campfire, and bunk together in some amazing lodge-style accommodations. Learn from some of the industry’s best about diabetes innovation, new strategies for management, and have the chance to try out some of the latest diabetes tech. We’ll see you there!

SUMMIT SPONSORS

ATLANTIC SLIPSTREAM TEAM

Alanna Stockley

Atlantic Slipstream Lead

Working with Halifax Municipal Government in Planning and Development, living in Middle Sackville with her husband, born and raised in Cape Breton. Will never say no to a coffee (unless it`s after 3 pm.) Alanna has a deep unbridled passion for both nature and food science, and just started a blog about her food at www.wiltedandwild.com. These are the categories you want her on your team for in trivia: food and nature. Please don't ask Alanna the name of a song, band on the radio, or professional sports because then she will be forced to make something up. Her favourite outdoor activities are hiking, fishing and canoeing. Alanna has never turned a trip to the beach or pool down, and is usually the last one out of the water....just don't mention her irrational fear of fish. Did she mention that she has a fish tank? Look, Alanna is a complex person. The best way to get to know her is joining her on a trail, having a cup of coffee with her or asking her about food and/or cooking. Alanna really wants to be good at gardening, but pulling weeds makes her roll my eyes so hard she gets a headache so she hit farmer's markets instead. Her favourite food is dill pickles.

Becky Marval

Atlantic Slipstream Lead

Since being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 9, Becky has always let her diabetes shine! That is, she’s happy to kindly bust myths while hob-knobbing with 5.5ers, learn new things to make it possible to live an awesome, active life, and share tips and tricks with her peers (especially while out adventuring!). Becky is an Occupational Therapist involved in community engagement and has recently obtained her Certified Diabetes Educator designation. Getting involved in Connected in Motion as it makes its way to the East Coast is a wonderful fit!

What is a Slipstream Weekend, anyway?

A Slipstream Weekend is an active, social and educational weekend for adults living with Type 1 diabetes. But that explanation sounds so formal… What it really is… is a weekend jam packed full of outdoor adventure, engaging workshops, great food and incredible people. It’s a chance to connect (or re-connect) with like-minded Type 1s, get out and try something new, learn from each others’ experiences, and celebrate the year’s accomplishments – focusing on the positive aspects of what we CAN do with Type 1 diabetes.

What goes on at a Slipstream? Do you have a schedule ready?

We’ll post a full schedule as soon as we’ve crossed our Ts and dotted our Is. For now, check out a schedule from a past Slipstream Weekend. This year’s event flow will look quite similar.

Who can attend a Slipstream Weekend?

Slipstream is offered for adults who are living with Type 1 diabetes. There is something special that happens when you’re surrounded by a community of people who ‘get it’. Although we are so grateful for our support networks – our 5.5ers – Summer Slipstream is open exclusively to people living with Type 1 diabetes. (Don’t worry, 5.5ers – More coming for you, soon! Interested in getting involved in the CIM community? Learn how, here!)

FAQs

What do I need to bring with me?
You can check out our program packing lists, here. If there are any special items you’ll need, you’ll hear from us via email 2 weeks before the event. We’ll expect that you’ll bring your own diabetes supplies, clothing, and toiletries. We’ll provide all of the outdoor adventure equipment, a bed to sleep in, food… Just like camp… for adults!

What is the vibe of the weekend? Is this like a conference?
Not really! Here, at Connected in Motion, we wanted to get away from the typical ‘conference’ style of learning. We want to have meaningful conversations, hands-on learning, and actually get outside and put into practice some of the strategies for living well with diabetes that we’ve all learned along the way. You can expect a mix between indoor learning sessions – sometimes we’ll bring in special guests to share with us, other times we’ll run group workshops – and outdoor adventure sessions – don’t worry, we’ll let you define adventure! Think, camp for adults!

I’m not super fit. I’ve seen some of CIM’s photos and videos – everything looks epic. I don’t know if I’ll be able to handle Slipstream!
Of course you will! The CIM team are trained educators and adventure guides. We work hard to make sure that everyone experiences success, defined on your own terms. Whether that’s climbing a mountain, or just strolling to the trailhead, we’ll mould the experience to suit all ability levels. We’ll encourage you to step to the edge of your comfort zone, but we won’t push you off!

I’ve never been to something like this before – Can I bring a friend?
Slipstream is built just for adults with Type 1 diabetes – Do you have a friend with diabetes? Then, sure! Bring them along! We realize how scary it can be to jump into something like this alone and we commend everyone who has pushed themselves and join the community solo – We are proud of you! We know it’s not easy! We’ll do our best to help make joining the community easy for everyone – We’ll help arrange carpooling, make introductions throughout the weekend, plan ice breakers – whatever we need to do to make you feel welcomed. Come join us!

I have a special dietary need – celiac, dairy sensitivity, allergy – Can the venue accommodate me?
We’ll be working closely with the venue to ensure that we can meet the dietary needs of all of our Slipstreamers. Food is one of the highlights of a Slipstream experience! The venue knows that we will be a group with diverse needs and will be prepared to meet the needs of our crew. We’ll also work closely with you, if you’d prefer, to make sure that you’re comfortable with the food situation. We don’t want food to be a stress!

Will there be low supplies on site, or do I need to pack my own?
Low supplies will be plentiful! We’ll supply juice boxes, glucose tabs, granola bars, etc. As always, if you have your own favorites, please bring them along! (Maybe they will become our favourites, too!)

I see a lot of cool outdoor adventure activities listed. Do I need any of my own equipment?
Nope! For every activity offered at Slipstream, gear will be provided – It’s included in your registration fee!

Check out what other Slipstreamers have to say

I had participated in many diabetes-related events as a teenager but this was my first one with an adult group. It was a little intimidating at first but turned out to be an incredible experience! We all became one big families who was there to support one another and I left that weekend feeling refreshed, with a bunch of new friends and fun memories. Thank you for convincing me to come out, CIM! I made the right decision.

KatrinaSummer Slipstream 2016

This was my first experience with the CIM community. I have been diabetic type 1 for the past 36 years deal with this on my own. I knew there were other people who were as active as I was but didn't know anyone other than a close friend who lives in Ottawa area. The experience was so uplifting that I was not the only one and having discussions about the ups and downs on a very personal level. I am ready to do more active sessions with this community soon I hope.

MichelSummer Slipstream 2016

Although it's hard to put into words, being surrounded for an entire weekend with other T1's that totally "get it" from every finger prick, every high, every low, every carb count, every step i take in this T1 journey is beyond priceless!

GayleSoCal Slipstream 2016

I use to think and believe I was the only diabetic in the world. I really had no one to talk to about problems relating to diabetes. I attended the summer slipstream the presentations that were provided were educational and very informative. Not only did I meet new and amazing people but I met great life long friends and really a new family. It has turned my world right around my lowest A1C in 16 years and the best health I have been in 16 years because It put me in the right mind frame to conquer diabetes. This slipstream allowed me to also ask the questions that I always thought were "stupid" or everyone should know but I just didn't I would highly recommend it to anyone and in fact, I already have! Thanks CIM
