Team members will work to raise funds for Connected in Motion, culminating in completing the North Coast Trail in Cape Scott Provincial Park, on northern Vancouver Island. Several fundraising options are available – Does fundraising sound scary? Don’t worry! We have lots of tools, resources, and experience to help you out! You’ll be lacing up your hiking books before you know it!

Note: Applications deadline is February 28, 2017.

Check out our 2016 Adventure Team and the story of their journey through Gros Morne National Park.

What is the CIM Adventure Team, anyway?

After raising money for CIM, the Adventure Challenge team will take on the 58km North Coast Trail in Cape Scott Provincial Park, British Columbia. This will be a multi day hiking expedition along the northern coast of Vancouver Island. The North Coast Trail is said to be a hidden gem. The rugged trail passes through old and second growth Sitka spruce, hemlock and cedar forests, upland bogs, riparian areas, across sand, gravel and cobble beaches, and past sea stacks, rocky headlands, and tidal pools. The park is home to bald eagles, black bears, cougars, wolves, river and sea otters, mink, and an array of marine mammals.

Who can join the Team?

We invite you to apply to be a part of our 8-person 2017 Adventure Challenge Team. Applications are open to any adult, 19+, who is living with Type 1 diabetes or touched by Type 1 diabetes. Remember, the North Coast Trail is a challenging trek so you’ll want to be fit, able to carry at least 1/3 of your body weight by the time of our trek, and feel comfortable being outside and moving for 8-10 hours at a time. Not sure if you’re a fit? Fire us an email and help you figure it out.

What difference is the team making? Why should I care?

Over 3 million people are living with Type 1 diabetes throughout North America. Of that, a whopping 85% are adults!

Imagine yourself a young adult with diabetes. Otherwise healthy, active and outgoing – bi-monthly hospital visits are part of your routine. Sitting in the waiting room (often for hours as you miss valuable time at work/school) you find yourself surrounded by people who are… different. You head in to see the doctor, nurse or nutritionist. Perhaps you have a meaningful conversation and have the chance to ask a few questions. You might get handed a pamphlet to read, a new chart to refer to for carb counting or a website about ‘Healthy Living’ to check out. Your time is up. The next patient is waiting.

Current clinic-based education programs are centered around traditional education methodologies – classroom-based, lecture style education, clinicians telling patients how to manage their diabetes using books, pamphlets, one-on-one teaching sessions and information sessions.

After years of attending such programs through clinics, hospitals and diabetes education centres (and without the watchful eye and coaxing of parents!) many young adults and adults choose to simply ‘opt out’.

Connected in Motion is ‘breathing fresh air into diabetes education’. We believe a radically different approach to education is needed if we plan to keep the attention and engagement of the young adult and adult population.

By making diabetes education interactive, accessible, peer-based, community centered, socially engaging and most of all FUN, we hope to encourage and increase engagement in diabetes education and ultimately improve the self-management of young adults and adults with Type 1 diabetes. What is Diabetes

Where is it going down?

Fundraising will be happening wherever you are, as soon as you are accepted to the team.
The actual adventure will take place in British Columbia. Team Members will convene in Vancouver and CIM will take over from there. We’ll fly from Vancouver to Port Hardy, and stay in a local hostel as we prep for the trail. We’ll start our trek with a 1 hour water taxi to Shushartie Bay where we’ll begin our 6 day trek. We’ll hike west along the northern coast of Vancouver Island, wrapping around and eventually joining the Cape Scott Trail before ending in the Cape Scott Parking Lot. We’ll travel back to Port Hardy for a day of unwinding and then fly back to Vancouver.

How much will I be expected to fundraise? Is there a registration fee?

In order to have the biggest impact, each team member will be required to raise at least $2500. All donations made of over $25 will qualify for a tax receipt. That number may sound big, but we’ll help make it less scary. We have lots of tools and tips and experiences to help you reach your goal – And remember, you can always aim higher! Once you’ve reached your fundraising goal, (almost) all of your trip expenses will be covered through the CIM’s own fundraising efforts, through the help of our sponsors and partners. Those expenses include return flights from Vancouver, on-the-ground and ferry transportation in BC, all food and snacks, group camping gear, guides, permits, emergency equipment… the list goes on. There is a registration fee of $100 per hiker to reserve your spot once you’ve made the team.

FAQs

What do I need to bring with me?

The CIM Team will forward a packing list with all of the details you need to be packed appropriately. You can expect to receive this at least 1 month prior to the event. We’ll expect that you’ll bring your own diabetes supplies, clothing, and toiletries. You’ll be responsible for your own sleeping bag, and hiking boots (BREAK THESE IN!). CIM will bring all the communal hiking equipment like cooking gear, tents, safety gear, first aid kits, maps, compass, etc.

What is the vibe of the trip?

This will be a challenge for those that want to push their limits. On the trail, we will be moving every day – ie packing up tents and carrying everything to a new camping location. The North Coast Trail is a rugged, very muddy trek through bog and exposed ridge, including slippery sections on the coast. You can expect to be wet, wind-kissed, and hopefully sun soaked. Weather appropriate clothing is a must. We will be showing our communities what living with T1 looks like, challenging ourselves along one of Canada’s most beautiful hiking trails.

I’ve never been to something like this before – Can I bring a friend?

This year, we are accepting applications for the Adventure Challenge Team, but please tell your friends and have them apply as well. We are welcoming T1s, 5.5ers/T3s.

Where will we be sleeping?

Prior to our trip, and at its successful conclusion, we will stay in dorm-style rooms (with just our team!) in the Port Hardy Hostel. During our trek we will be sleeping in tents on tent platforms.

I have a special dietary need – celiac, dairy sensitivity, allergy – Can you accommodate me?

CIM has plenty of experience catering to a variety of dietary needs. We’ll work closely with you to make sure that you’re comfortable with the food situation. We don’t want food to be a stress!

Do you have a questions that you’d like answered? Send them to peter@connectedinmotion.ca with Team Challenge FAQ in the subject line and we’ll get your questions answered!
