About Dr Jane Yardley

Jane Yardley, PhD, completed her PhD in Population Health at the University of Ottawa in 2011. Her doctoral thesis focused on the effects of resistance exercise, on its own or combined with aerobic exercise, in physically active individuals with type 1 diabetes. She is now a member of faculty at the University of Alberta, and part of the Physical Activity and Diabetes Laboratory at the Alberta Diabetes Institute. Jane is still performing research related to type 1 diabetes and exercise, with projects focused on resistance exercise and high intensity intermittent intervals. She is a co-author of the 2016 American Diabetes Association Position Statement on Diabetes and Exercise/Physical Activity. Outside the lab and classroom, Jane practices what she preaches by cycling and running in the summer, cross-country skiing in the winter, and (of course) enjoying resistance exercise year round!

About Dr Kimber Simmons

Kimber Simmons is a board-certified pediatric endocrinologist at the Barbara Davis Center in Aurora, CO. Prior to medical training, her educational focus was learning how nutrition and activity affect how the body works, and she completed a MS in Exercise Physiology where she studied the effect of diet and exercise training on cardiovascular and blood vessel health. As a former collegiate athlete, person living with type 1 diabetes for over 30 years and overall recreation enthusiast, she has a passion for helping her patients achieve their fitness and athletic goals and has become a local expert on exercise and T1D. She is a strong patient advocate and frequently asked to provide education to other medical professionals both locally and internationally. She loves helping her patients work through the complex challenges that T1D introduces in their lives, but she ultimately hopes for a T1D prevention and cure! Therefore, she is actively engaged in research to screen children for T1D before they get sick and to better understand why people get T1D. As part of the Barbara Davis Center Prevention Team, she leads clinical trials that aim to prevent T1D or help people make insulin for longer. She wakes up early to exercise because she believes that getting her heart pumping is key for her mental health among the chaos of everyday life. She is a coffee aficionado and has perfected the art of pour over coffee and lattes. She loves spending weekends hiking with her family and looks forward to when her children are old enough for her family to summit Colorado 14ners together!

About the Panelists

Rob Howe serves as Chair of Beyond Type 1’s Leadership Council’s Ambassador Committee. He has been living with Type 1 diabetes for 13 years, and is an Entrepreneur, Marketing Strategist, Podcaster and former professional basketball player. In 2015, Rob founded Diabetics Doing Things, in an effort to raise awareness around the amazing things that Type 1 diabetics are doing around the world. As of 2018, Rob’s podcast has been downloaded over 250,000 times, from listeners in over 50 countries. He hopes for a day where children, teens and adults who are diagnosed with T1D need only go online and search for people with Type 1 diabetes who do the thing they love, and feel confident that the dreams for their life are still valid. Rob lives in Dallas Texas with his girlfriend Erica and their cat and dogs, Michael J. Fox, Rowan & Enzo.

Lauren Salko began alpine ski racing while attending high school in Maine. She continued to compete as a member of the Saint Anselm College varsity women’s team. She raced all over the world and placed in the top 10 at collegiate nationals which earned her All-American status. Post-college, Lauren is competing full-time. She has had many USASA nationals podium finishes including being the top American and 2nd over all at the USASA national championships in 2019. In 2016, as a member of the Riding on Insulin Endurance Team, Lauren competed at Ironman Wisconsin while fundraising for the organization. Lauren is often accompanied by her diabetes alert dog, Silas.Lauren’s participation is part of Tandem Diabetes Care’s Live Life in Full Color speaker series.

Kate Hall was born January 12, 1997 and lives in Casco, Maine. She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and celiac disease at ten years of age and immediately had to learn how to manage both diseases full time. After asking to give herself her very first shot of insulin, Kate decided to take this full time management head on and turn it into something positive. Kate’s work ethic in track and field stems from having to control her health from a very young age. Once she was in high school, she began to excel even more and accomplished her goal of making it to the Olympic Trials and setting the high school national record in the long jump.

Matt Vande Vegte is a certified personal trainer, nutritionist, author, and Type 1 diabetic whose biggest goal in life is to help people around the world Thrive with diabetes. Matt specializes in stabilizing blood sugars surrounding fitness and nutrition, and helping clients to live happy and healthy lives with diabetes through the online health coaching programs that he leads at www.ftfwarrior.com. FTF Warrior is an online health coaching company that is dedicated to improving the lives of people living with diabetes. We empower people living with diabetes to gain better control and renewed purpose in their lives through lifestyle changes, education, accountability and online community.

About the Panellists

Peter Nerothin (living with type 1 diabetes since 2001) is Managing Partner at Adventure Consulting Group and a PhD student at the University of San Diego. He holds a master’s degree in Adventure Education and Applied Psychology from Prescott College. Peter has worked locally and internationally as a wilderness guide and outdoor field instructor, and has more than 10 years of experiences working with individuals with diabetes through nonprofit organization management. His current focus is rock climbing in Southern California. Peter surfs or runs trails every day with his wife Blair (type 1 since 2000).

Julie has been adventuring with Type 1 diabetes since 2005, and can’t decide whether she likes her touring bicycle, hiking boots or backcountry skis the most. She grew up in the mountains of Montana and has since lived in four states, climbing peaks in Glacier National Park, exploring the coastal trails of Oregon, earning her master’s degree in Utah and training for a marathon in Flagstaff, AZ. She ran the TCS NYC Marathon with Beyond Type 1 on November 5, 2017

Jordan is a 28 year old, South Carolina native. She has worked on super yachts and traveled the world for the last 6 years! Jordan was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on September 6, 2016 while working on a yacht in Italy. When she was diagnosed she decided to bring some light and humor to her diagnosis, along with more awareness to the disease by starting her Instagram: @butfirst_insulin, where you can read and watch her life as she documents what it is like living with T1D as she continues to travel the world! Living with Diabetes is a day to day challenge but there is nothing she can’t do without a bright smile, positive attitude and a good sense of humor!

Born and raised in Southern Ontario, Kyle felt the itch for adventure in early 2013 and set off across Canada, searching for a life that had always been missing, finding a home in Banff National Park, Alberta. Kyle spends his free time in Banff, Skiing, Mountaineering, and Backcountry camping. In 2019 Kyle joined Connected In Motion as part of the Adventure Team, hiking the historic Chilkoot Trail.

Exercise and Diabetes: Finding your Formula

Session Description

This is a practical, hands-on session presented by Christel Oerum where we’ll both learn the basics of diabetes and exercise as well as dive into blood sugar logging, analysis, and blood sugar management strategies so you can find your unique formula for successfully exercising with diabetes.

About Christel Oerum

Christel has been living with Type 1 diabetes since 1997 and has always been very determined not to let her diabetes affect her quality of life. She is the author of the popular diabetes book Fit With Diabetes. She is the main content creator on Diabetes Strong, an active diabetes advocate, public speaker, and diabetes coach. Christel holds an MBA in Finance & Strategy and an ISSA Personal Trainer certification with specialization in Fitness and Diabetes (Level 3 certified from the Diabetes Motion Academy)
