Jan. 7 Monday in Motion Recap: 2013 goals for keeping active

This week’s question: What’s your goal for keeping active for this new year?

Responses: People talked about their exercise goals for the year. Some had specific targets to reach for the year: Mark is training for a 21k in March, and hoping to do more depending on how that run goes. Similarly, Katie (@avisualtinkle)is planning on running the half at this year’s Pittsburgh Marathon in May. Andrew is running the Missisauga Marathon in the same month. Shauna is getting ready to participate in the Ottawa Race Weekend (where Connected in Motion is considered an official charity for which to raise funds! WOOT!) And, finally, Michelle’s goal for the year is to complete the Sinister 7, an amazing 148km course through Alberta’s Rocky Mountains.

Others had less specific exercise goals for the year: Shauna wants to try a spin class; Saci wants to continue to run and cycle*; Andy wants to keep biking; Chantal wants to spend more time at the gym; Lizzie got a ski pass to Blue Mountain; Shannon is trying to keep up with running regularly, by running with her housemates; while, Katie’s goal for 2013 is to keep consistent in her activity.

On a slightly different note, Andy commented “my goal for keeping active is just that. I don’t really identify with ‘exercise’ much, for me it’s more about venturing out on my own power all day that really inspires me.”

Virtue’s Take: Wow! It sounds like people have some great plans for 2013! I did like that Andy differentiated between active living and exercise. To me being active means generally looking for ways to keep moving during the day– even if it is just small, like taking the stairs instead of the escalator or walking some place instead of taking the car. Exercise seems more like an intense activity that you have to schedule. Both are important, but sometimes it’s easier to start with the smaller actions and work up to the bigger goal of an ongoing exercise routines.

*Saci’s tip to start cycling and keep up with it: “I say if you cycle get connected with a local group. I got hooked some years ago and never looked back.”

Thanks to everyone that participated! If you missed responding via Facebook or Twitter, let us know in the comments about your personal goal(s) for keeping active for this new year…
