March 18th Monday in Motion Recap: Best diabetes related apps?

This month’s Monday in Motion theme is technology and how it helps/hinders life with diabetes. Last week we asked what’s your biggest pet peeve about diabetes tech

This week’s question: What are your favourite diabetes related apps?

Responses:There were two responses this week… Lizzie mentioned that she likes the Diasend web-based application that is used with the Animas insulin pumps. She likes that her clinic can easily look at her numbers when she consults them about an issue. Lizzie further noted, “I also like the Calorie Counter app on my iPhone that always me to count carbs on the run, while it keeps a food log.” Jen followed up by saying, “I love the iBGstar app! I don’t know how they did it, but I actually get excited to test my BG on it! Definitely a few things I would alter or change for the next version, but I really like it.”

Virtue’s Take: Responses seemed a bit sparse this week. I’m not sure if people just didn’t have the chance to answer… or, if people just haven’t found many useful diabetes related apps.

The only diabetes app I’ve tried has been On Track for Android. I liked it and did use it for a while, but I eventually lost interest and forgot about it. What I did find useful about the app was that it allowed me to track everything- not just blood glucose and medication, but exercise and carb intake. What I did not like about it was that I had to input everything… At this point in technology I feel like there should be a way to sync your meter and smartphone, thereby allowing you to use your smartphone as a more detailed/annotated logbook of readings. I know it seems like a small thing, but inputting the blood glucose readings as you go is not always convenient and actually takes a bit of time. So, in total having them directly sent to your phone would save a lot of hassle. Personally, I am hoping products like the recently FDA approved VerioSync are a sign that we will see more blood glucose meters with the ability to sync to smartphone applications.
