On September 21st, twenty-five Type 1s converged at Strathcona Park Lodge & Outdoor Centre on the shores of Upper Campbell Lake, Vancouver Island. Like tributaries of a river, we came together for a weekend to flow in the first Western Slipstream.
Ive been helping manage Connected in Motions social media profiles for the past little while. As we make our way to the month of November, and the organization heads into its major fundraising event Slipstream in the City, I have been thinking a lot about peoples diabetes stories I have heard over the years Ive been involved with Connected in Motion.
When I was asked to do a guest blog my response was a simple Sure, why not?
I thought it would be an easy task: recounting a five-day canoe trip in Algonquin Park with 10 other Type 1s (and one 5.5er).But when I sat down to write, I struggled where to even I begin.
This past weekend, I had the pleasure of joining 14 other people with type 1 diabetes on the third Annual CIM Canoe Trip. This year we ventured into the backcountry of Algonquin to experience the warmth of the forest, the cool calm waters of Tom Thomson Lake, the quiet serenity of a night paddle across Burnt Island… and the gut wrenching screams of the pterodactyl-like ravens that came out at the break of dawn.
This past weekend, Connected in Motion experienced another first – The very first event dedicated to our community of 5.5ers (friends, family members, loved ones of anyone with T1!) The three-day backcountry canoe trip, which took place in Algonquin Park, Ontario, invited 5.5ers out to meet other 5.5ers. We even invite them to bring their Type 1s along!

A wise man once told me, “You have a choice. You can throw in the towel, or you can use it to wipe the sweat off of your face.” (Okay, maybe that was a Gatorade advertisement, but still!) This past weekend, CIM and the T1/5.5er Community converged on the Nation’s capital take take on the Ottawa Marathon Weekend races.
April 21 saw the Connected in Motion community come together in its largest gathering yet for a amazing afternoon of fun in the sand! A total of 16 teams entered the tournament – donned in matching team outfits (special shout out to the blindingly-bright ‘A Velociraptor ate my Pancreas’ Team;…
CIM founder and Executive Director Chloe (Steepe) Vance is highlighted in this months Insulin Nation.
A fun new partnership with Riding on Insulin gives CIMers the chance to be inspired by youth with Type 1. And we hope the other way around too!
