Hannah's Trail Journal: Introduction

Welcome to a special series on our blog! In these guest posts, we’re excited to share the unique perspectives and experiences of Hannah Kyrkos, a member of our 2023 Adventure Team. Hannah’s first-person narratives offer a personal and intimate glimpse into her journey and adventures. These posts reflect Hannah’s own voice and experiences as a part of the Connected in Motion community. We hope you enjoy this fresh and inspiring addition to the CIM blog.

Hello! My name is Hannah and I was a member of Connected In Motion’s 2023 Adventure Team. I joined the team last year on our trek across the Teton Crest Trail in Wyoming, and raised a lot of money for Connected In Motion during 2023. I love the outdoors and over my previous backpacking trips I have kept a daily diary/trip journal of my hikes. This year, I published these as newsletters on my blog so that people who supported my fundraising campaign could follow along on our adventure. It also gave me an opportunity to write from a lens of chronic illness and managing diabetes while on the trek. I am excited to get to share these blog posts with you today through CIM.

Before we start, let me tell you a bit about myself. I live in San Francisco, California but am originally from Canada. I’m 24 years old and have lived with type 1 since I was one year old. I was also diagnosed with Celiac disease in 2022. I love running, hiking, and doing crafts like knitting in my spare time. This was also my first Connected In Motion event as an attendee. I hope you enjoy reading about our team’s trek this year. And if you live with type 1 and are considering applying to the team in the future – all I can say is do it! It was such a cool and wonderful experience to spend time with a community of type one diabetics, and to support an organization that makes events like this possible for the wider community. Our team bonded so closely over the trip and we still regularly keep in touch. It’s an opportunity I am so happy I got to experience. Now, on to the newsletters! We start on the first day the team met, landing in Jackson Wyoming shortly before beginning our trek. See you there!
