Recap: Ontario Slipstream 2023 – A Weekend to Remember

By October 2, 2023The Log Book

And that’s a wrap on Ontario Slipstream 2023, hosted by Connected in Motion in partnership with DiabetesSangha. It was an unforgettable weekend that brought together individuals from the diabetes community for a weekend filled with connection, laughter, and growth. Against the backdrop of breathtaking fall colours, over 100 adults (and over 2200 years of T1D experience) came together to connect with others who ‘get it’.

Check out our 10 favourite memories from the weekend:

Breathtaking Fall Colours

The fall colours were just starting to peak out and we were there for it. Although there was really one tree that stole the show with its vibrant hues, it was such a treat to get to walk through the beautiful leaves and smell the aroma of fall. The picturesque setting added an extra touch of magic to the entire experience.

Connecting with the Diabetes Community

One of the most memorable aspects of Slipstream was witnessing the incredible number of people who were attending and connecting with the diabetes community for the first time. It was a powerful and meaningful experience that fostered a sense of belonging and support. We want to shout out to everyone who came alone for the very first time. We admire your bravery and we’re so glad you were there!

Celebrating Years (and Years!) of Experience with T1D

Connected in Motion was thrilled to be able to recognize and honor individuals who have lived with diabetes for 25 years or more. Over 30 people received 25-year journey awards, while 5 individuals were celebrated for their remarkable 50-year journey with diabetes. These awards served as a reminder of the resilience and strength within the community and are a program of Children with Diabetes. To learn more about the program, click here.

The Polar Bear Dip

The polar bear dip on Saturday and Sunday mornings saw over 30 participants taking the plunge into the crisp waters. And by plunge, we mean wade into the beach waters. For any folks who have polar bear dipped before, you know that the wade-in adds an additional level of challenge!

Laughter Galore

Laughter echoed throughout the weekend, from being able to laugh at our diabetes stories around the campfire to the infectious joy of the diabetes-minute-to-win-it games. (A special shout-out to those who took on the “Junk in the Trunk” game – Your skills did not go unnoticed!)

The Return of the Great Cookie Bake-Off

The Great Cookie Bake-Off was a highlight of the weekend, where participants learned the basics of baking and created their own cookies without a recipe. The results ranged from delicious to hilariously… interesting. Pickle-juice cookie, anyone?

Conquering Fears

Slipstream provided individuals with the opportunity to conquer their fears in a supportive environment. From first-time insertions of continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) (SERIOUS shoutout, here!) to braving the high ropes course, the collective bravery displayed was truly inspiring.

Realizing the Amazingness of the Community

We kicked off Ontario Slipstream by bringing back People Bingo. From meeting individuals with celebrity doppelgangers to hearing extraordinary diagnosis stories, it was a chance to bond and form connections that will last beyond the retreat.

Our Incredible Volunteers

The smooth running of the weekend was made possible by an incredible group of volunteers. From setting up and facilitating Minute to Win It to running around camp in search of the ‘right’ dongle for the AV equipment, their dedication and hard work were invaluable. Special thanks to Ellie, Shannon, Alycia, Hilary, Caileigh, Beatriz, Nick, Tammy, Lorraine, Chrissy, and Janis for their selflessness and commitment.

The Most Perfect Weather

The weather was truly exceptional throughout the Ontario Slipstream weekend. With blue skies, warm sunshine, and barely a cloud in sight, it was the epitome of the perfect retreat experience. No mittens were needed, unlike previous Slipstreams that have seen snowfall.

As we reflect on the 2023 Ontario Slipstream, we extend a major thank you to our sponsors – Tandem Diabetes Care, Dexcom Canada, and Medtronic Canada – whose support made this event possible. We also want to give a shoutout to Sam, co-founder of our partners at DiabetesSangha, for bringing calm and tranquility to Slipstream through his meditation sessions.

Our gratitude extends to Camp Couchiching for their warm hospitality, delicious meals, and fantastic outdoor activities. And, of course, a heartfelt thank you to all our speakers for leaving us with valuable insights and ideas to enhance life with diabetes.

We cannot forget to acknowledge our Lead Staff, Amy and Meghan, for their immense behind-the-scenes work that contributed to the success of the weekend.

Lastly, we want to highlight the courage and bravery of those who attended Slipstream for the first time. Stepping into new experiences and embracing the community takes immense courage, and we commend you for being truly awesome.

Ontario Slipstream 2023 was a weekend filled with connections, laughter, personal growth, and an amazing sense of calm, being surrounded by people who TRULY get it. It was a testament to the strength and support within the diabetes community. Thank you for being a part of this unforgettable event.
