What is a Slipstream?
A Slipstream is an active, social and educational weekend for adults living with Type 1 diabetes. But that explanation sounds so formal… it’s really a weekend jam-packed with outdoor adventure, engaging workshops, great food and incredible people. It’s a chance to connect (or reconnect) with like-minded Type 1s, get out and try something new, and learn from each others’ experiences. Let’s celebrate our accomplishments and focus on the positive aspects of what we CAN do with Type 1 diabetes.

When attending a Slipstream, you can expect to stay in shared bunk-style accommodation. All accommodations offer electricity in the cabins for all of your diabetes-charging needs. When CIM is searching for venues, we look for options that are comfortable with adults including easy access to bathrooms and showers (in the cabins, whenever possible), climate controlled spaces, and reasonable sized beds.
Slipstreams take place in outdoor camps across North America. There are plenty of opportunities to get active and have fun regardless of what Mother Nature throws at us. We always plan for weather to be unpredictable – hot, cold, wet, or dry. We can’t control the weather, but we can control how we dress. Bring lots of comfy layers, as well as athletic, fast-drying, and wicking clothing.

Today, Julie is a Registered Kinesiologist, Certified Diabetes Educator, and Health Coach. She is passionate about living life to its fullest and helping those in the diabetes community thrive.
Mark Davis
Mark has been managing diabetes since 1985. His parents and Camp Huronda were instrumental in learning to navigate the complex autoimmune disease. Mark is the owner and operator of @WoodnMuskoka, a small woodworking company located in Ontario.
Mark connected with Chloe and Jen at the second annual CIM Slipstream. His background in adventure programming and group facilitation makes him a solid fit in the framework of CIM and its community. Mark enjoys being outdoors and spending time with his wife and 3 dogs. He is excited to be joining his friend Julie in Colorado this summer.
Andrea Lafleche
Andrea has lived with Type 1 Diabetes for the last 27 years. As a former diabetes camp camper and counselor she is excited to get back to camp, meet a bunch of new diabesties and hit up the high ropes course 🙂 Before coming to The Diabetes Link as the Program Manager - Peer Support, Andrea supported college students at a variety of institutions across the country. Now settled in the Hudson Valley of New York with her partner and pitbull Vinny, Andrea enjoys learning jui jitsu, thrifting, finding cider spots and hitting up a good arcade.
Peyton Skoczylas
Peyton Skoczylas is passionate about storytelling and building community and has been involved in disability advocacy for as long as she can remember. She was diagnosed with T1D in 2008 at 7 years old. She grew up in the Chicago metro area and moved to NYC for college. She recently graduated from Fordham University with a BA in English and Japanese Studies. While at Fordham, she helped found their chapter of The Diabetes Link and eventually joined The Diabetes Link as a Program Coordinator. She now lives in Hoboken, New Jersey with her boyfriend and her dog. In her free time, Peyton enjoys reading, writing, traveling, scrapbooking, and watching spooky movies.
Annie Cooper
Annie was diagnosed with T1D in 2011 during her freshman year of high school and has since been on a mission to change what it means to the world to be living with diabetes. Through endurance sport, Annie has two goals: to test her limits of what is physically possible, and to inspire others with diabetes to do the same. And as a former NCAA D1 athlete, Annie is no stranger to the challenges that sport and diabetes present. Now as a long distance runner/triathlete with several marathons, half marathons, and IRONMAN 70.3 races under her belt, she hopes to share her knowledge surrounding managing diabetes with others so they, too, can discover their limits and find what makes them feel strong.
Ashlee Ernst
Ashlee was diagnosed with T1D at the age of nine in Lincoln, Nebraska. From a young age she was engaged in the T1D community through camps, backpacking trips, and half marathons. Ashlee now works as a Certified Diabetes Educator at the Barbara Davis Center in Denver, Colorado and enjoys giving back to the T1D community. In her free time she enjoys hiking, rafting, and traveling.

He is a huge fan and advocate for events that allow the diabetes community to come together and support one another such as Slipstream.
Kacey Creel
Kacey strives to provide a welcoming environment to all people living with diabetes. She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 7 and credits the positive outcomes she has had with her own diabetes management from what she has learned from the diabetes community. With more involvement in the community she discovered gaps that crucially need to be filled to help all people thrive with diabetes, including communities that have historically not had a seat at the table. With this she co-founded Diversity in Diabetes. Which is a non-profit that works to increase representation and inclusivity in the diabetes space. This has helped fuel her passion for person-first language and care, as well as, the language movement around diabetes. Kacey also enjoys helping others learn how to be a self-advocate for themselves in the crazy world that is health care. With the right tools in our diabetes toolbox we are able to figure out what thriving with diabetes looks like for us. Kacey has a background in nutrition and a Masters in Diabetes Care and Management. She enjoys exploring outside, rock climbing, thrift shopping, crafting, and hanging out with her partner and their 6 year old beagle baby, Remi.
Katie Larson
Katie Larson was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio in a close community always surrounded by supportive and caring family and friends.
She was diagnosed with type 1 when she was 6 years old. She has always viewed type 1 as a 'challenge accepted', strengthening factor, and way to live a healthier life. Katie has always been passionate about giving back to the type 1 community. The tipping point came when she co-founded a College Diabetes Network group for The Ohio State University, she realized this was an arena she wanted to dedicate a large portion of her life.
The determination to find leaders in the future of diabetes care led to an internship at the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes in Colorado summer of 2015 spiraling into full-time employment on the Barbara Davis Center Pediatric Artificial Pancreas Team in 2016.
Katie knew the second she stepped into the center this was where she belonged. The Barbara Davis Center is full of energy, passion, and people working to heighten care for those with T1D. Outside of work, she has been a volunteer at the Children's Diabetes Foundation, Colorado Children's Hospital, medical staff for American Diabetes Association Camp Colorado, and is currently pursuing a Master's in Public Health in order to obtain a Certified Diabetes Educator license to be able to further help those with type 1 diabetes. Colorado fuels Katie's insatiable thirst for adventure and deep passion for the great outdoors, serving as the catalyst for her initiative known as 'Trials on the Trail'. With an unwavering commitment to her community, Katie established this platform to empower individuals in effectively managing their diabetes while engaging in thrilling outdoor escapades.

Her ultimate goal is to guide my clients to find wellness, peace with food, and respect for their bodies in ways that can last.
Peter Friedfeld
At the carefree age of 56, I was quite surprised to be diagnosed with Diabetes, on Valentines Day no less. Talk about Self-Compassion. For my first year I lived a life trying to accept this misdiagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes, only to be correctly diagnosed as Type 1 eighteen months later. During that time, I developed an engaged yoga practice which helped me heal my mind and body. In the early days of COVID under home confinement (everything from home) I began my relationship with a mindfulness practice and Zen teachings—both of which have helped me immensely in so many ways. I am passionate about connecting in this community and in finding ways to give back , to continually share my experiences, and in growing from these relationships.

Getting There? Accommodations? Food? Packing List?
Oops, you’ve scrolled too far! All of that information is answered further up the page. Click here!
What is the vibe of the weekend? Is this like a conference?
Not really! Here, at Connected in Motion, we wanted to get away from the typical ‘conference’ style of learning. We want to have meaningful conversations, hands-on learning, and actually get outside and put into practice some of the strategies for living well with diabetes that we’ve all learned along the way. You can expect a mix between indoor learning sessions – sometimes we’ll bring in special guests to share with us, other times we’ll run group workshops – and outdoor adventure sessions – don’t worry, we’ll let you define adventure! Think, camp for adults!
I'm not super fit. I don't know if I'll be able to handle this event.
Of course you will! The CIM team are trained educators and adventure guides. We work hard to make sure that everyone experiences success, defined on your own terms. Whether that’s climbing a mountain, or just strolling to the trailhead, we’ll mould the experience to suit all ability levels. We’ll encourage you to step to the edge of your comfort zone, but we won’t push you off!
I have a special dietary need: celiac, dairy sensitivity, allergy, etc. Can the venue accommodate me?
We do our best to accommodate special dietary requests, and our team works closely with the venue to ensure they are aware of any food allergies or special diets in the group. If you have a special dietary concern, please be sure to let us know well in advance so we can find out what accommodations or substitutions the venue is able to offer.
Will there be low supplies on site, or do I need to pack my own?
Low supplies will be plentiful, but it’s always a good idea to bring your own! We’ll supply juice boxes, glucose tabs, granola bars, etc. As always, if you have your own favourites, please bring them along! (Maybe they will become our favourites, too!)
I see a lot of cool outdoor adventure activities listed. Do I need any of my own equipment?
Nope! For every activity offered at Slipstream, gear will be provided. It’s included in your registration fee!
What's included in my registration?
- Shared accommodation (usually bunk-bed style)
- All meals and snacks (Friday evening dinner through Sunday Lunch)
- Outdoor programming (past examples include: rock climbing, challenge course, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, swimming, etc)
- CIM-specific programming
What is NOT included?
