What is a Slipstream?

A Slipstream is an active, social and educational weekend for adults living with Type 1 diabetes. But that explanation sounds so formal… it’s really a weekend jam-packed with outdoor adventure, engaging workshops, great food and incredible people. It’s a chance to connect (or reconnect) with like-minded Type 1s, get out and try something new, and learn from each others’ experiences. Let’s celebrate our accomplishments and focus on the positive aspects of what we CAN do with Type 1 diabetes.

When attending a Slipstream, you can expect to stay in shared bunk-style accommodation. All accommodations offer electricity in the cabins for all of your diabetes-charging needs. When CIM is searching for venues, we look for options that are comfortable with adults including easy access to bathrooms and showers (in the cabins, whenever possible), climate controlled spaces, and reasonable sized beds.

Stay tuned for our menu! We do our best to accommodate special dietary requests, and our team works closely with the venue to ensure they are aware of any food allergies or special diets in the group. If you have a special dietary concern, please be sure to let us know well in advance.

Most of the venues we use are nut-free. Please leave all nut products at home.

Please note: the camp will do its best to accommodate individual dietary requirements, but may not be able to cater to every request. If you follow a highly specialized diet (keto or paleo, for example), you may wish to bring along snacks or supplements (nut-free) that can keep you happy and healthy.

Slipstreams take place in outdoor camps across North America. There are plenty of opportunities to get active and have fun regardless of what Mother Nature throws at us. We always plan for weather to be unpredictable – hot, cold, wet, or dry. We can’t control the weather, but we can control how we dress. Moreover, it will delve into the role of allyship, encouraging participants to stand alongside their peers, amplifying their voices and strengthening the collective power of the community.

With this she co-founded Diversity in Diabetes. Which is a non-profit that works to increase representation and inclusivity in the diabetes space. This has helped fuel her passion for person-first language and care, as well as, the language movement around diabetes. Kacey also enjoys helping others learn how to be a self-advocate for themselves in the crazy world that is health care. With the right tools in our diabetes toolbox we are able to figure out what thriving with diabetes looks like for us. She enjoys exploring outside, rock climbing, thrift shopping, crafting, and hanging out with her partner and their 6 year old beagle baby, Remi.

Katie Larson

She was diagnosed with type 1 when she was 6 years old. She has always viewed type 1 as a 'challenge accepted', strengthening factor, and way to live a healthier life. Katie has always been passionate about giving back to the type 1 community. The tipping point came when she co-founded a College Diabetes Network group for The Ohio State University, she realized this was an arena she wanted to dedicate a large portion of her life.
The determination to find leaders in the future of diabetes care led to an internship at the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes in Colorado summer of 2015 spiraling into full-time employment on the Barbara Davis Center Pediatric Artificial Pancreas Team in 2016.
Katie knew the second she stepped into the center this was where she belonged. The Barbara Davis Center is full of energy, passion, and people working to heighten care for those with T1D. Outside of work, she has been a volunteer at the Children's Diabetes Foundation, Colorado Children's Hospital, medical staff for American Diabetes Association Camp Colorado, and is currently pursuing a Master's in Public Health in order to obtain a Certified Diabetes Educator license to be able to further help those with type 1 diabetes. Peter Friedfeld

Speaker + Facilitator

At the carefree age of 56, I was quite surprised to be diagnosed with Diabetes, on Valentines Day no less. Talk about Self-Compassion. For my first year I lived a life trying to accept this misdiagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes, only to be correctly diagnosed as Type 1 eighteen months later. During that time, I developed an engaged yoga practice which helped me heal my mind and body. In the early days of COVID under home confinement (everything from home) I began my relationship with a mindfulness practice and Zen teachings—both of which have helped me immensely in so many ways. I am passionate about connecting in this community and in finding ways to give back , to continually share my experiences, and in growing from these relationships.

What is a Slipstream Weekend, anyway?

But that explanation sounds so formal… What it really is… is a weekend jam packed full of outdoor adventure, engaging workshops, great food and incredible people. It’s a chance to connect (or re-connect) with like-minded Type 1s, get out and try something new, learn from each others’ experiences, and celebrate the year’s accomplishments – focusing on the positive aspects of what we CAN do with Type 1 diabetes.

What goes on at a Slipstream? Do you have a schedule ready?

Think of Slipstream as a choose your own adventure experience. You’ll have the chance to build your own schedule to create an experience that works best for you and your goals for the weekend.

When the schedule is ready, it will be added to this page under the Schedule At A Glance.

Who can attend a Slipstream Weekend?

Slipstream Weekends are available to people aged 18+ who are living with Type 1 diabetes. We have had participants from ages 18 to 82 and have no upper age restrictions as long as you are willing to bring a smile and a love for being active.

We do offer programs where your friend or partner living without Type 1 can join through our 5.5er series! Check out our 5.5er Slipstream or 5.5er Canoe Trip.

Getting There? Accommodations? Food? Packing List?

Oops, you’ve scrolled too far! All of that information is answered further up the page. Click here!

What is the vibe of the weekend? Is this like a conference?

Not really! Here, at Connected in Motion, we wanted to get away from the typical ‘conference’ style of learning. We want to have meaningful conversations, hands-on learning, and actually get outside and put into practice some of the strategies for living well with diabetes that we’ve all learned along the way. You can expect a mix between indoor learning sessions – sometimes we’ll bring in special guests to share with us, other times we’ll run group workshops – and outdoor adventure sessions – don’t worry, we’ll let you define adventure! Think, camp for adults!

I'm not super fit. I don't know if I'll be able to handle this event.

Of course you will! The CIM team are trained educators and adventure guides. We work hard to make sure that everyone experiences success, defined on your own terms. Whether that’s climbing a mountain, or just strolling to the trailhead, we’ll mould the experience to suit all ability levels. We’ll encourage you to step to the edge of your comfort zone, but we won’t push you off!

I have a special dietary need: celiac, dairy sensitivity, allergy, etc. Can the venue accommodate me?

We do our best to accommodate special dietary requests, and our team works closely with the venue to ensure they are aware of any food allergies or special diets in the group. If you have a special dietary concern, please be sure to let us know well in advance so we can find out what accommodations or substitutions the venue is able to offer.

Will there be low supplies on site, or do I need to pack my own?

Low supplies will be plentiful, but it’s always a good idea to bring your own! We’ll supply juice boxes, glucose tabs, granola bars, etc. As always, if you have your own favourites, please bring them along! (Maybe they will become our favourites, too!)

I see a lot of cool outdoor adventure activities listed. Do I need any of my own equipment?

Nope! For every activity offered at Slipstream, gear will be provided. It’s included in your registration fee!

What's included in my registration?

  • Shared accommodation (usually bunk-bed style)
  • All meals and snacks (Friday evening dinner through Sunday Lunch)
  • Outdoor programming (past examples include: rock climbing, challenge course, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, swimming, etc)
  • CIM-specific programming

What is NOT included?

  • Transportation to and from the program venue is not included
  • Diabetes supplies (make sure to bring everything you need for yourself!)

I'd love to join, but don't think I can afford it.

We never want someone to miss out on a CIM experience, simply because they can’t afford it. The purpose of the CIM Program Subsidy is to eliminate financial barriers for those who want to attend a Slipstream weekend or Adventure program. These subsidies are possible because of the fundraising by past CIM Adventure Team members.
To apply for a subsidy, please complete a CIM Program Subsidy Application.

What is the refund policy?

We offer full refunds for Slipstream program registrations until 30 days before the start of each program. Unfortunately, CIM is unable to refund Slipstreams registrations that are canceled less than 30 days from the start of the program due to arrangements with our host venues. For cancellations more than 30 days before the program, a refund (minus an administration fee) will be issued. To request a cancellation, please email info@connectedinmotion.ca.

I still have a question I need answered.

Still have questions? Send them to info@connectedinmotion.ca with Slipstream FAQ in the subject line and we’ll get your questions answered!

What Slipstreamers Had To Say

I had participated in many diabetes-related events as a teenager but this was my first one with an adult group. It was a little intimidating at first but turned out to be an incredible experience! We all became one big families who was there to support one another and I left that weekend feeling refreshed, with a bunch of new friends and fun memories. Thank you for convincing me to come out, CIM! I made the right decision.

KatrinaSummer Slipstream 2016

This was my first experience with the CIM community. I have been diabetic type 1 for the past 36 years deal with this on my own. I knew there were other people who were as active as I was but didn't know anyone other than a close friend who lives in Ottawa area. The experience was so uplifting that I was not the only one and having discussions about the ups and downs on a very personal level. I am ready to do more active sessions with this community soon I hope.

Although it's hard to put into words, being surrounded for an entire weekend with other T1's that totally "get it" from every finger prick, every high, every low, every carb count, every step i take in this T1 journey is beyond priceless!

GayleSoCal Slipstream 2016

I use to think and believe I was the only diabetic in the world. I really had no one to talk to about problems relating to diabetes. I attended the summer slipstream the presentations that were provided were educational and very informative. Not only did I meet new and amazing people but I met great life long friends and really a new family. It has turned my world right around my lowest A1C in 16 years and the best health I have been in 16 years because It put me in the right mind frame to conquer diabetes. This slipstream allowed me to also ask the questions that I always thought were "stupid" or everyone should know but I just didn't I would highly recommend it to anyone and in fact, I already have! Thanks CIM
