5.5er Canoe Trip 2019
July 11, 2019 - July 14, 2019
Join us for a weekend of community, connection, and adventure, set against a backdrop of fresh air!
Whether it’s your first or hundredth trip, we want to paddle with you.
Take part in our 5.5er Canoe Trip in Ontario – especially for adults who support someone in living with Type 1 – partners, family, close friends. We call these people our 5.5ers. This will be a chance to share your experiences with other partners, parents, siblings, and best friends of the Adults with Type 1 diabetes in our lives, while exploring the lakes of Ontario’s French River Provincial Park. Days will be spent paddling and portaging, with lunch on the water. We’ll have time at camp each day to relax, hang a hammock, and take a swim. We’ll be able to learn from one another about how to set ourselves up for success, managing Type 1 diabetes and supporting our loved ones in the backcountry.
As always, the 5.5er Canoe Trip will cater to a wide range of skill levels and experience but will be very limited in space. We will be accepting 6 pairs – one 5.5er and one T1 per pair, please!
Need some canoeing tips? No problem! Basic skill instruction opportunities can be provided on the Thursday pre-trip – Let us know if you are interested!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What happens on a CIM Canoe Trip?
CIM Canoe Trips cater to a range of experience and abilities. You can expect to join us on Thursday night at a car-camping site. This means we’ll have our vehicles nearby and amenities including toilets and, in some cases, even showers. We’ll use Thursday evening to get to know one another, to answer any last minute questions, to get familiar with setting up our tents and using our group gear, and getting excited for Friday morning.
Friday morning we’ll sometimes travel by car to our canoe launch – other times we can launch right from our campsite! We’ll spend Friday and Saturday paddling, portaging, and sleeping in the backcountry. Sunday we’ll make our way back to our parked vehicles, planning to be on the road by 2pm.
Directions & Carpooling Information
We’ll be meeting at Grundy Lake Provincial Park on the evening of Thursday, July 11.
Who can register for the 5.5er Canoe Trip?
The 5.5er Canoe Trip is offered for adults who are living with Type 1 diabetes as well as their support crew. There is something special that happens when you’re surrounded by a community of people who ‘get it’. The 5.5er Canoe Trip came to be out of a need for support networks to be connected. Has your partner ever met another partner of someone with Type 1? Let this be their chance!
FAQs
What sort of camping gear do I need to bring along with me?
Check out the packing list in the tab above!
Missing something on the list? Not quite sure if your camping gear is up to snuff? Looking for some help? Need to borrow something? CIM has lots of equipment and gear that we can loan to participants. Whether you’re in need of a sleeping pad or sleeping blanket, flashlight or water bottle – we can help you out. We’ll send out more info as we get closer to the event. You can always feel free to post in the event FB page with questions!
I have a special dietary need – celiac, dairy sensitivity, allergy – Can the canoe trip accommodate me?
We work hard to ensure that we can meet the dietary needs of all of our canoe trippers. Food is one of the highlights of a canoe trip experience! We’ll work closely with you to make sure that you’re comfortable with the food situation. We don’t want food to be a stress!
Will there be low supplies on the trip, or do I need to pack my own?
Definitely pack enough of your favourite low snacks to see you through the trip but, don’t worry, we will bring some too just in case!
