We are excited to share with the CIM community that Medtronic MiniMed 780G with advanced SmartGuard has received Health Canada approval. The technology is the next step in Medtronic’s advanced hybrid closed loop system offering. You can read Medtronic’s official press release here.

New elements in the software include:

  • Autocorrections – auto bolus corrections that help make up for carb counts that are underestimated or occasionally missed meal doses
  • Personalized glucose targets – lets you select your glucose target (5.5, 6.1 or 6.7 mmol/L)
  • Frequent adjustments and corrections – adjusts insulin delivery every 5 minutes to smooth out highs and lows

These automatic correction boluses, and adjustable glucose targets mark a jump from the 770G which only allowed adjustment to basal insulin rates every five minutes.

This is an exciting new option for Canadians with type 1 diabetes to increase the amount of time their blood glucose is in range. Medtronic reports that on average users spend 76% of their time in range while using MiniMed 780G system with advanced SmartGuard.

Individuals currently using the MiniMed 770G system will be able to accept the upgrade to their system through a remote software update. Medtronic will be in touch with eligible individuals on how to upgrade their system in coming months to provide them close contact support for the upgrade. The MiniMed 780G system is expected to begin shipping in 2023.

The Medtronic Guardian Connect CGM is currently available through a subscription service, reducing the annual cost. We also hope to hear soon whether the MiniMed 780G will be eligible for Medtronic’s CGM Access Program to further alleviate financial costs.
