A NOTE ON 2022 IN-PERSON PROGRAM PLANS

NEW HEALTH & SAFETY MEASURES: The CIM Team and Board of Directors continue to work on preparing to bring our community back together. As we serve individuals living with chronic illness, this may mean additional safety protocols including vaccination requirements, sanitization, changes to meals and accommodation, and total program capacity will be in place for some time in the future. These plans will be clearly communicated as program dates near. FOR NOW, WE REQUEST THAT ONLY FULLY VACCINATED INDIVIDUALS REGISTER FOR THIS PROGRAM.

WHAT: Annual Canoe Trip 2022
WHERE: Algonquin Provincial Park, ON
WHEN: June 30 – July 3, 2022
WHO: Adults (18+) with Type 1 diabetes
PRICE: Earlybird $250 CAD (Deadline: March 30) / Regular $295 CAD (Deadline: June 16)
CANCELLATION POLICY: CIM will make a decision as to whether it is safe to host this program one month in advance of the start date. Should it not be safe, we will provide full refunds to all participants.

Whether it’s your first or hundredth trip, we want to paddle with you.

Take part in a CIM Canoe Trip this summer. This will be a chance to share your experiences with other adults with Type 1 diabetes while exploring by canoe the iconic Barron Canyon in Algonquin Park. Days will be spent paddling and portaging, with lunch on the water. We’ll have time at camp each day to relax, hang a hammock, and take a swim. We’ll be able to learn from one another about how to set ourselves up for success, managing our Type 1 diabetes in the backcountry.

This canoe will cater to a wide range of skill levels and experience and will be limited in space. We will be accepting 14 participants with Type 1 Diabetes.

Need some canoeing tips? No problem! Basic skill instruction opportunities can be provided on the Thursday pre-trip – Let us know if you are interested!

What Is A CIM Adventure?

CIM Adventures help to connect people with Type 1 diabetes in the backcountry. The trips give you the chance to get away from the everyday hustle and bustle of your every day life; learn skills for taking diabetes into the wild; and step outside of your comfort zone into the place where magic happens. These programs are for veterans and new adventurers alike.

All The Important Information You Could Need

Algonquin Provincial Park – Achray Campground

We will be meeting at Achray Campground where we will stay our first night of the trip. Achray Campground is located on the eastern side of Algonquin Provincial Park, approximately 3 hours west of Ottawa (1.5 hours west of Pembroke), and approximately 6 hours northeast of Toronto. Achray Campground is situated at:

latitude: 45.86837755341280, longitude: -77.7566385269165 .

Directions from Pembroke:

From Highway 17, turn south on County Road. 26 (Doran Road). Drive 300 m and turn right onto County Road. 28 (Barron Canyon Road). Drive 26 km to Sand Lake Gate, then turn left and drive 4.5 km to Achray Campground on Grand Lake.

Directions from Toronto (Via 401 W, ON-115 N, ON-28 N):

Take the 401 W from Toronto and get off at exit 436 for ON-35/ON-115 towards Lindsay/Peterborough. Continue on ON-115 N for 51 km. Slight right onto Hwy 7/Trans Canada Hwy (signs for Ottawa). Drive for 7.3 km and then turn left on ON-28 N. Stay on ON-28 N for 101 km.

Turn left onto Chemaushgon Rd, and then right onto Station St. Drive After 400 m, turn left onto Hastings St N/ON-62 N. Continue on ON-62 N for 55 km.

Turn right onto Old Barrys Bay Rd and drive for 8 km. Turn right onto Hopefield Road, drive for 6.5 km and turn left onto Opeongo Road. After 850 m, turn right onto Wilno S Road, continue for 5.5 km and turn right onto ON-60 E.  Stay on ON-60 E for 6 km and turn left onto Simpson Pit Road/County Road 67. Drive 10 km and turn left onto Round Lake Road/County Road 58/Pembroke.

Stay on Round Lake Road for 40 km and then turn left onto Doran Road/County Road 26. Drive 6 km and turn left onto Barron Canyon Road, continue for 46 km. Turn left onto Achray Road, drive 5 km to reach Achray campground.

When attending a CIM Canoe Trip, you can expect to stay in a shared tent with 1-2 other campers.

Participants are expected to bring their own sleeping bag (and sleeping pad if you’d like extra cushioning). If this is a barrier for you, let the CIM team know. We’d be happy to help provide you with your missing tripping pieces.

Food is a very important part of CIM Trips. We love cooking as a group, sharing delicious meals, and being creative with food in the backcountry. This ain’t no beans and weiners type of trip! Check out a sample menu below to see what types of meals we’ve prepared in the past.

Although we do love our food and do our best to accommodate special dietary requests, we ask trippers to be as flexible as possible during tripping programs. We are equipped to manage celiac, vegetarian and vegan options, as well as most allergies. We aim to provide carb-conscious options for trippers. If you follow a Very Low Carb (VLC) diet, in some instances, we may ask you to bring along your own supplements for meals. If you have a special dietary concern, please be sure to let us know on your registration forms as we begin our menu planning early.

Heading out with CIM on a Canoe trip? To make sure you are ready for the woods, please read this list of recommended personal gear. CIM will bring all the communal gear – tents, cooking etc. – but this list is for you, the participant.

Weather can be unpredictable and quick to change; so be prepared for all weather, at all times. Don’t forget to consider what you will be wearing on the day that we head out. That counts as an outfit. Keep in mind – Most people bring WAY too much gear! When packing for a paddling trip we want to ensure we have everything we need, but try to pack as light as possible.

We’ll be packing in waterproof 35L dry-bags. You can pick these up at MEC, REI or Canadian Tire! We encourage all of our campers to fit all of their main gear into a 35L pack – It might seem crazy, but it’s totally doable!

Camp Clothing

  • Long sleeve shirts (1)
  • Long pants (1 pair, quick-dry or synthetic fiber)
  • T-shirt
  • Light-weight fleece/Wool sweater (optional)
  • Shorts (1 pair, quick-dry)
  • Bathing suit Small towel (optional)
  • Rain Gear (top and bottom)
  • Brimmed Hat
  • Underwear
  • 2-3 pairs wool socks

Footwear

  • Closed-toed shoes for the boat and water (these can be old running shoes)
  • Closed-toed shoes for the campsite

Toiletries

  • Biodegradable soap
  • Toothbrush/paste

Equipment

  • Sleeping bag (bulky is ok- we will have heat in the yurts but the warmer the better!)
  • Sleeping pad (foam pad or Therm-a-Rest, optional- we will be sleeping in bunk beds with mattresses)

Other

  • Head lamp/flashlight – check the BATTERIES!
  • Water bottle (Nalgene)
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen

Diabetes Supplies/Meds

  • Any meds you need in waterproof containers.
  • Insulin and supplies (enough to last a week) – be sure to pack extra pump sites, reservoirs, pump batteries, syringes, pen caps, etc.
  • Glucometer and testing supplies
  • Glucagon Kit (if you have one)
  • *Please label your diabetes supplies with your name

Optional

  • Personal PFD (otherwise, will be supplied)
  • Personal Paddle (otherwise, it will be supplied)
  • Lightweight long underwear (optional)
  • Eyeglasses and contact lenses to spare (if needed)
  • Connected in Motion T-shirt
  • Small day pack Bandana Earplugs

We have an action-packed weekend of adventures. Below is a loose sample of what you can expect on your trip.

Thursday

6:00PM
Group begins to arrive at car-camping site. Hang out around campfire. Explore the campground.

Most of group has arrived. Look at maps and discuss trip route around the campfire with snacks.

Friday

8:00am
Group breakfast and campsite pack-up. Head out after breakfast to launch canoes and leave cars at the end-point.

12:00pm
Take a break to take in the scenery and enjoy lunch. Sometimes we’ll raft up our boats and float with lunch, and other times we’ll find a beautiful island to pull up to and give our legs a stretch.

2:00pm
Aim to arrive at Campsite #1. Unpack boats, set up the campsite, and have free time to explore, swim, read, and relax.

6:00pm
Cook ourselves dinner as a group. The rest of the evening is ours to enjoy. Stargazing, chatting around the campfire, sharing stories…

Adventure Coordinator|CIM Guide

Sarah has always had a love for the outdoors and has worked as an Ontario Junior Ranger, a canoe trip guide, and outdoor educator. Diagnosed with type one diabetes in 2017, she considers herself extremely lucky to have crossed paths with Connected in Motion soon after, and has been involved with CIM ever since. Sarah completed a BSc in marine biology in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and hopes to attend veterinary school in the future. In her free time Sarah enjoys hiking, camping, canoeing, snowboarding, birding, and planning dream trips!

Who can register for this event?

This trip is offered for adults who are living with Type 1 diabetes. There is something special that happens when you’re surrounded by a community of people who ‘get it’. Although we are so grateful for our support networks – our Support Crew – this trip is open exclusively to people living with Type 1 diabetes (Looking for Support Crew-friendly programming? Check out our Support Crew Virtual Slipstream and Support Crew Canoe Trip).

What sort of camping gear do I need to bring along with me?

Check out the packing list in the tab above! Missing something on the list? Not quite sure if your camping gear is up to snuff? Looking for some help? Need to borrow something? CIM has lots of equipment and gear that we can loan to participants. Whether you’re in need of a sleeping pad or sleeping blanket, flashlight or water bottle – we can help you out. We’ll send out more info as we get closer to the event. You can always feel free to post in the event FB page with questions!

What's included in my registration fee?

  • Camping Permits (Thursday through Sunday)

What is the refund policy?

We offer full refunds for Adventure program registrations until 30 days before the start of each program. Unfortunately, CIM is unable to refund Adventure registrations that are canceled less than 30 days from the start of the program due to arrangements with our host venues. For cancellations more than 30 days before the program, a refund (minus an administration fee) will be issued. To request a cancellation, please email info@connectedinmotion.ca.

Getting the opportunity to do all three trips this year was beyond amazing for myself. When I am with other T1's I am constantly learning new things, sharing knowledge, having a riot, and generally have tighter control of my diabetes. But then you add canoe tripping- a personal passion of mine and it literally turns it into a dream vacation that I gain enormous amounts of memories, lessons and laughs from. Can hardly wait for next year!

The CIM extended canoe trip provided a fabulous opportunity for me to really challenge myself both physically and mentally. I appreciated that personal goals and growth were prioritized over speed / efficiency and that those on the trip were encouraged to test their limits without feeling pressure to perform for the sake of the group.

The only time I feel lucky to have diabetes is when I am fortunate enough to be in the presence of other Type 1 diabetics. I had heard a lot about Connected in Motion and felt such pride in Chloe Steepe and Jen Hanson for starting such an amazing organization to “Breathe fresh air into diabetes education.” I have had, in the last 33 years, many folks in my corner trying to help me manage my diabetes. There’s my dietician, kinesiologist, Diabetes nurse, family and friends, of course my Endo. I wouldn’t change any of that because obviously they are intrinsic to my continued care. I am however, thrilled to have been able to touch base with people actually living the disease. People that have daily/hourly challenges similar to the ones I have. To be able to bounce ideas off one another, share tricks and tips, talk about meters, devices and all things diabetes with the people using them. This is priceless... free actually as well as fun AND educational. I thought I was too old for Connected in Motion’s 3rd Annual Canoe Trip. I thought I’d make all the younger folks uncomfortable hanging with an older gal. ( 46yrs ) That’s the other thing about diabetes that I like, it forms a bond that is ageless and automatic. The canoe trip ROCKED and at no time did I feel my age limited me. I strongly encourage any older T1’s out there to jump right in and join CIM’s next event! We will all be there with open and accepting arms!

The CIM Annual Canoe Trip was an amazing experience. It had been a long time since I had been around that many people with type 1 diabetes. It was such a valuable opportunity to learn from each other, to share tips and experiences, and really, just to have the opportunity to spend time with some incredible people who can relate to living life with Type 1 diabetes.
