What is a Slipstream?

A Slipstream is an active, social and educational weekend for adults living with Type 1 diabetes. But that explanation sounds so formal… it’s really a weekend jam-packed with outdoor adventure, engaging workshops, great food and incredible people. It’s a chance to connect (or reconnect) with like-minded Type 1s, get out and try something new and learn from each others’ experiences. Let’s celebrate our accomplishments and focus on the positive aspects of what we CAN do with Type 1 diabetes.

When attending a Slipstream, you can expect to stay in shared, bunk-style accommodations with electricity for all of your diabetes charging needs. When CIM is searching for venues, we look for options that are comfortable for adults, including easy access to bathrooms and showers (in the cabins, whenever possible), climate-controlled spaces, and reasonably sized beds.

Stay tuned for our menu!

We do our best to accommodate special dietary requests, and our team works closely with the venue to ensure they are aware of any food allergies or special diets in the group. If you have a special dietary concern, please be sure to let us know well in advance.

Most of the venues we use are nut-free. Please leave all nut products at home.

Please note: the camp will do its best to accommodate individual dietary requirements, but may not be able to cater to every request. If you follow a highly specialized diet (keto or paleo, for example), you may wish to bring along snacks or supplements (nut-free) that can keep you happy and healthy.

Slipstreams take place in outdoor camps across North America. There are plenty of opportunities to get active and have fun regardless of what Mother Nature throws at us. Slipstream Team

Tina Brown

Co-lead

Tina has been rocking the world of living with T1D for 30 years, using all kinds of platforms and systems. Her connection to outdoor adventures started at Camp Huronda, where she worked for many summers, the final few as the Assistant Director. She learned very early in her diagnosis, the power of a community that has a shared understanding and the rich knowledge exchange that happens when together. She finds it to have the most impact on her diabetes well-being and this is the magic that drives her work with CIM. In her daily life she is the Executive Director at Montessori Academy of London, where she tries to get on all the outdoor field trips! You can also find her riding her bike, fishing for bass or hiking the trails.

Julie De Vos

Co-lead

Julie has spent much of her life volunteering and working in the T1D community. These passions led her to a degree in Kinesiology and Health Sciences and a career path in the diabetes industry, focused on building programs and communities for not-for-profit diabetes organizations. Today, Julie is a Registered Kinesiologist, Certified Diabetes Educator, and Health Coach. She is passionate about living life to its fullest and helping those in the diabetes community thrive.

Kyle Howard

Volunteer

Originally from Ontario, Kyle has made a home for himself in the breathtaking Canadian Rockies. Kyle was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 16 years ago, which has been a challenge he has met head-on and has not let slow him down. In 2019, Kyle was a member of the CIM adventure team that successfully hiked the historic and challenging Chilkoot Trail between Alaska and British Columbia, showcasing his determination and passion for adventure. Kyle is a devoted father and husband who enjoys spending his free time hiking & camping in the mountain parks with his family and capturing the beauty of nature through his photography. He has a deep appreciation for the outdoors and the peace it brings.Through his work as a painter/decorator and his personal life, Kyle continues to inspire others to overcome obstacles, explore the great outdoors, and pursue their passions with a positive and determined mindset.

Sarah Ketcheson

Volunteer

Although Sarah grew up in the East, she now works and plays on Treaty 7 Territory in the West, with Calgary, Alberta serving as her home base. Growing up, her summers involved connecting with the Type 1 community at Camp Huronda. These experiences working with youth paved her path towards becoming an educator. Sarah is entering into her 24th year living with Type 1 diabetes and has plans to hike, mountain bike and SUP into this anniversary. On her rest days, Sarah attempts to maintain her vegetable garden or figure out creative ways to trick her spouse Nathan into planning more hikes.

Angela von Krogh

Volunteer

Angela grew up in a small town in central Alberta. When she was diagnosed with T1D at the age of 12, she was the only kid with diabetes in town. She took responsibility of her testing and dosing quickly and continued dancing, skiing, running and hiking as she always had. After high school, Angela worked to fund her travels abroad, always carrying months worth of diabetes supplies around with her, unsure where the next reliable pharmacy would be. She decided to study massage therapy since she finds helping others so rewarding. Angela's home is now in Banff, Alberta. She was drawn to Banff by the scenery, sporting choices, multi-national residents, as well as the proximity to her family. When not working or digging in her community garden plot, she is scrambling up Rocky Mountain peaks, skijoring with her rescue dog Gladys, doing multi-day river canoes and camping with her amazingly supportive partner, family and friends.

Brooke Cassoff

Speaker + Facilitator

I am an avid learner, traveler, and cookie enthusiast that has been living life with T1D (and all of its ups and downs) for over 15 years. I came to meditation in 2016 while in the midst of significant personal and professional transitions and have been growing in the practice ever since, most recently as a member of the first Applied Compassion Training cohort offered through the Stanford Center for Compassion and Altruism Research & Education (CCARE). Mindfulness and compassion practices have been tremendous forces for good in my life and I am excited to share them with the broader diabetes community!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Slipstream Weekend, anyway?

A Slipstream Weekend is an active, social and educational weekend for adults living with Type 1 diabetes. But that explanation sounds so formal… What it really is… is a weekend jam packed full of outdoor adventure, engaging workshops, great food and incredible people. It’s a chance to connect (or re-connect) with like-minded Type 1s, get out and try something new, learn from each others’ experiences, and celebrate the year’s accomplishments – focusing on the positive aspects of what we CAN do with Type 1 diabetes.

What goes on at a Slipstream? Do you have a schedule ready?

Think of Slipstream as a choose your own adventure experience. You’ll have the chance to build your own schedule to create an experience that works best for you and your goals for the weekend.

When the schedule is ready, it will be added to this page under the Schedule At A Glance.

Who can attend a Slipstream Weekend?

Slipstream Weekends are available to people aged 18+ who are living with Type 1 diabetes. We have had participants from ages 18 to 82 and have no upper age restrictions as long as you are willing to bring a smile and a love for being active.

We do offer programs where your friend or partner living without Type 1 can join through our 5.5er series! Check out our 5.5er Slipstream or 5.5er Canoe Trip.

Getting There? Accommodations? Food? Packing List?

Oops, you’ve scrolled too far! All of that information is answered further up the page. Click here!

What is the vibe of the weekend? Is this like a conference?

Not really! Here, at Connected in Motion, we wanted to get away from the typical ‘conference’ style of learning. We want to have meaningful conversations, hands-on learning, and actually get outside and put into practice some of the strategies for living well with diabetes that we’ve all learned along the way. You can expect a mix between indoor learning sessions – sometimes we’ll bring in special guests to share with us, other times we’ll run group workshops – and outdoor adventure sessions – don’t worry, we’ll let you define adventure! Think, camp for adults!

I'm not super fit. I don't know if I'll be able to handle this event.

Of course you will! The CIM team are trained educators and adventure guides. We work hard to make sure that everyone experiences success, defined on your own terms. Whether that’s climbing a mountain, or just strolling to the trailhead, we’ll mould the experience to suit all ability levels. We’ll encourage you to step to the edge of your comfort zone, but we won’t push you off!

I have a special dietary need: celiac, dairy sensitivity, allergy, etc. Can the venue accommodate me?

We do our best to accommodate special dietary requests, and our team works closely with the venue to ensure they are aware of any food allergies or special diets in the group. If you have a special dietary concern, please be sure to let us know well in advance so we can find out what accommodations or substitutions the venue is able to offer.

Will there be low supplies on site, or do I need to pack my own?

Low supplies will be plentiful, but it’s always a good idea to bring your own! We’ll supply juice boxes, glucose tabs, granola bars, etc. As always, if you have your own favourites, please bring them along! (Maybe they will become our favourites, too!)

I see a lot of cool outdoor adventure activities listed. Do I need any of my own equipment?

Nope! For every activity offered at Slipstream, gear will be provided. It’s included in your registration fee!

What's included in my registration?

  • Shared accommodation (usually bunk-bed style)
  • All meals and snacks (Friday evening dinner through Sunday Lunch)
  • Outdoor programming (past examples include: rock climbing, challenge course, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, swimming, etc)
  • CIM-specific programming

What is NOT included?

  • Transportation to and from the program venue is not included
  • Diabetes supplies (make sure to bring everything you need for yourself!)

I'd love to join, but don't think I can afford it.

We never want someone to miss out on a CIM experience, simply because they can’t afford it. The purpose of the CIM Program Subsidy is to eliminate financial barriers for those who want to attend a Slipstream weekend or Adventure program. These subsidies are possible because of the fundraising by past CIM Adventure Team members.
To apply for a subsidy, please complete a CIM Program Subsidy Application.

What is the refund policy?

We offer full refunds for Slipstream program registrations until 30 days before the start of each program. Unfortunately, CIM is unable to refund Slipstreams registrations that are canceled less than 30 days from the start of the program due to arrangements with our host venues. For cancellations more than 30 days before the program, a refund (minus an administration fee) will be issued. To request a cancellation, please email info@connectedinmotion.ca.

I still have a question I need answered.

Still have questions? Send them to info@connectedinmotion.ca with Slipstream FAQ in the subject line and we’ll get your questions answered!

What A Slipstream Weekend Looks Like

Don’t believe us? Just watch!

What Slipstreamers Had To Say

I had participated in many diabetes-related events as a teenager but this was my first one with an adult group. It was a little intimidating at first but turned out to be an incredible experience! We all became one big families who was there to support one another and I left that weekend feeling refreshed, with a bunch of new friends and fun memories. Thank you for convincing me to come out, CIM! I made the right decision.

KatrinaSummer Slipstream 2016

This was my first experience with the CIM community. I have been diabetic type 1 for the past 36 years deal with this on my own. I knew there were other people who were as active as I was but didn't know anyone other than a close friend who lives in Ottawa area. The experience was so uplifting that I was not the only one and having discussions about the ups and downs on a very personal level. I am ready to do more active sessions with this community soon I hope.

MichelSummer Slipstream 2016

Although it's hard to put into words, being surrounded for an entire weekend with other T1's that totally "get it" from every finger prick, every high, every low, every carb count, every step i take in this T1 journey is beyond priceless!

GayleSoCal Slipstream 2016

I use to think and believe I was the only diabetic in the world. I really had no one to talk to about problems relating to diabetes. I attended the summer slipstream the presentations that were provided were educational and very informative. Not only did I meet new and amazing people but I met great life long friends and really a new family. It has turned my world right around my lowest A1C in 16 years and the best health I have been in 16 years because It put me in the right mind frame to conquer diabetes. This slipstream allowed me to also ask the questions that I always thought were "stupid" or everyone should know but I just didn't I would highly recommend it to anyone and in fact, I already have! Thanks CIM
