T1D Tech & Innovation: The Connected in Motion team surveyed the community to find out the topics and themes that were top of mind as we launched into 2021. This is what we’ve learned from you and what we’ll be focusing on addressing in the year to come. Did we miss something? Let us know in the comments!

AI, Algorithms, and Automation

In 2014, Stanford University published a study suggesting that someone with Type 1 diabetes makes, on average, an extra 180 health-related decisions every day when compared to someone without diabetes.[1] That number is staggering. And so it’s no wonder that there has been growing excitement in the diabetes community as artificial intelligence (AI), algorithms, and diabetes management automation technologies develop. As these technologies develop and become accessible to people with diabetes, the burden of extra decisions (and, let’s be honest, decisions that have serious consequences if you make an error!) begins to decrease.

Have you ever thought about what you’d spend your time doing with your thoughts if they weren’t occupied with diabetes?

We’ve teamed up with the folks at Tandem Diabetes Care and the team at Medtronic Diabetes to learn more about their latest advancements in closed-loop technology and how people are using the tech in the real world.

DIY Diabetes

The DIY (Do-It-Yourself) Diabetes movement began in 2013 when pioneer, Dana Lewis, was frustrated with her CGM alarms not being loud enough. She connected with diabetes dad, John Costik, to learn about how he had engineered a way to see his son’s CGM data remotely.[2] Not long after that Dana began developing her own algorithm to not only make her CGM alarms louder but also to predict her blood sugars and make suggestions for diabetes management actions to correct predicted out of range numbers.

There is a wide range of experiences in the community related to DIY Diabetes. Some of you are totally on top of the latest updates, building new systems and trialling new algorithms. Others are only hearing about DIY Diabetes solutions for the first time. We wanted to provide an opportunity to hear more about the pros and cons of DIY Diabetes solutions and take a look at what could be on the horizon as more closed-loop commercial systems come to market.

The Future of DIY

With Kate Farnsworth, Advocate
Thursday, April 22nd, 2021 8:30pm ET

The Do-it-yourself diabetes movement is growing! As more diabetes technology works towards interoperability, find out what that might mean for the DIY diabetes community. Learn about the benefits and challenges of going DIY.

Interoperability

The diabetes community is made up of an incredible collection of people. If you’ve had the pleasure of spending time with a group of people with diabetes, you likely learned quickly that there is no one solution for anything diabetes-related. What works for one person may have the opposite effect for someone else. This is especially true when it comes to diabetes devices. And this is why choices and interoperability become so important.

Interoperability in diabetes is the idea that devices, regardless of the manufacturer, can “talk” to one another. In an ‘interoperable’ diabetes world, any BG meter can talk to any CGM. Any CGM can talk to any Insulin Pump. Smart Pens can connect with smart meters.

The FDA has identified interoperability as an important factor in ensuring improved care, reduced errors and adverse events, and to encourage innovation and diabetes device companies have started to listen.

Using Tech to improve self-management

Finally, we heard from you about the digital burnout that can sometimes come from embracing diabetes tech. With more numbers, data, and technology at our fingertips than ever before, we sometimes wonder whether we are truly reducing the burden of diabetes or if we’re adding information with the tools to process, understand or make change.

We heard about the importance of making data actionable. Taking numbers and doing something with them so we can feel better and live healthier lives with diabetes.
