Ontario Hiking Weekend 2021

August 20, 2021 - August 22, 2021

A NOTE ON 2021 IN-PERSON PROGRAM PLANS

ENCOURAGING ALL PARTICIPANTS TO BE FULLY VACCINATED: We strongly encourage all participants attending Ontario Hiking Weekend to be fully vaccinated (2-doses) prior to attending the event. If you are not fully vaccinated, you can find more information about how to get vaccinated, here. If you are NOT fully vaccinated, we discourage you from participating and instead encourage you to check out our upcoming virtual events.
PARTICIPANTS MUST BE ONTARIO RESIDENTS: All participants attending Ontario Hiking Weekend must be current residents of Ontario to be eligible to join this event. With the Canada-U.S border currently closed and opening with restrictions on August 9, 2021, we do not feel confident inviting our friends in the U.S to join this event due to the travel restrictions and the increasing spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19. If you are from the U.S or from a province outside of Ontario, we ask that you do not register for this event. We look forward to having you at our events in the future!
PRE-EVENT PARTICIPANT SCREENING: Prior to attending Ontario Hiking Weekend, the CIM Team will be in contact to screen each participant for symptoms of COVID-19. If symptoms are present, we will provide a refund to the participant and cancel their registration.
PHYSICAL DISTANCING: Throughout the Ontario Hiking Weekend program we will be maintaining physical distancing of at least 2m between all staff and all participants. Whenever 2m cannot be maintained or whenever indoors (bathrooms, ferry, etc) masks will be required.
ADDITIONAL SAFETY MEASURES: The CIM Team and Board of Directors continue to work on preparing to bring our community back together. This may mean additional safety protocols including sanitization, changes to meals and accommodation, and total program capacity, will be in place for some time in the future. These plans will be clearly communicated as program dates near.

What Is A CIM Adventure?

CIM Adventures help to connect people with Type 1 diabetes in the backcountry. The trips give you the chance to get away from the everyday hustle and bustle of your every day life; learn skills for taking diabetes into the wild; and step outside of your comfort zone into the place where magic happens. These programs are for veterans and new adventurers alike.

When attending the CIM Hiking Weekend 2021, you can expect to stay in your own tent as part of our updated COVID-19 protocols. CIM provides tents for all trippers. The tents we bring depend on the length and type of trip, other upcoming CIM trips, and our current inventory, but are likely to be a MEC Volt/Apollo 3-person tent, an MSR Hubba Series tent or a MEC Wanderer 4-person tent.

Trippers are expected to bring their own sleeping bag and sleeping pad. If this is a barrier for you, let the CIM team know. We’d be happy to help provide you with your missing tripping pieces.

Food is a very important part of CIM Trips. We love cooking as a group, sharing delicious meals, and being creative with food in the backcountry. This ain’t no beans and weiners type of trip! Check out a sample menu below to see what types of meals we’ve prepared in the past.

Although we do love our food and do our best to accommodate special dietary requests, we ask trippers to be as flexible as possible during tripping programs. We are equipped to manage celiac, vegetarian and vegan options, as well as most allergies. We aim to provide carb-conscious options for trippers. If you follow a Very Low Carb (VLC) diet, in some instances, we may ask you to bring along your own supplements for meals. If you have a special dietary concern, please be sure to let us know on your registration forms as we begin our menu planning early.

Your Guides

Amy Burrows

CIM Guide

Amy was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1988, after a few months of being ill and a couple misdiagnoses (doctors tried to assure her mom it was just the flu)! She grew up going to Camp Huronda in the summer time from ages 8-20 where she met many of her closest friends, and made unbreakable bonds. She spends her days working in dentistry, and enjoying the outdoors. Amy adores anything in the outdoors, especially hiking and canoe tripping - often using her free time to guide and take personal trips!

Anissa Gamble

CIM Guide

Anissa Gamble is a Canadian scientist and elite hockey player who has been living with type 1 diabetes since 2001 and Celiac disease since 2004. She played hockey in the NCAA D1, CWHL, and now PWHPA. Her research evaluated islet transplantation, digital health technologies, and implementation. For fun, she works with Connected in Motion as a co-guide for various outdoor adventures. She is currently attending dental school and continues to play hockey and conduct diabetes research.

Who can register for this event?

This trip is offered for adults who are living with Type 1 diabetes. There is something special that happens when you’re surrounded by a community of people who ‘get it’. Check out our Support Crew Virtual Slipstream and Support Crew Canoe Trip).

Check out the packing list in the tab above! Missing something on the list? Not quite sure if your camping gear is up to snuff? Looking for some help? Need to borrow something? We’ll send out more info as we get closer to the event. You can always feel free to post in the event FB page with questions!

What CIM Adventurers Had To Say

Getting the opportunity to do all three trips this year was beyond amazing for myself. When I am with other T1's I am constantly learning new things, sharing knowledge, having a riot, and generally have tighter control of my diabetes. But then you add canoe tripping- a personal passion of mine and it literally turns it into a dream vacation that I gain enormous amounts of memories, lessons and laughs from. Can hardly wait for next year!

Extended Canoe Trip Participant

The CIM extended canoe trip provided a fabulous opportunity for me to really challenge myself both physically and mentally. I appreciated that personal goals and growth were prioritized over speed / efficiency and that those on the trip were encouraged to test their limits without feeling pressure to perform for the sake of the group.

Extended Canoe Trip Participant

The only time I feel lucky to have diabetes is when I am fortunate enough to be in the presence of other Type 1 diabetics. I had heard a lot about Connected in Motion and felt such pride in Chloe Steepe and Jen Hanson for starting such an amazing organization to “Breathe fresh air into diabetes education.” I have had, in the last 33 years, many folks in my corner trying to help me manage my diabetes. There’s my dietician, kinesiologist, Diabetes nurse, family and friends, of course my Endo. I wouldn’t change any of that because obviously they are intrinsic to my continued care. I am however, thrilled to have been able to touch base with people actually living the disease. People that have daily/hourly challenges similar to the ones I have. To be able to bounce ideas off one another, share tricks and tips, talk about meters, devices and all things diabetes with the people using them. This is priceless... free actually as well as fun AND educational. I thought I was too old for Connected in Motion’s 3rd Annual Canoe Trip. I thought I’d make all the younger folks uncomfortable hanging with an older gal. ( 46yrs ) That’s the other thing about diabetes that I like, it forms a bond that is ageless and automatic. The canoe trip ROCKED and at no time did I feel my age limited me. I strongly encourage any older T1’s out there to jump right in and join CIM’s next event! We will all be there with open and accepting arms!

MarnaAnnual Canoe Trip 2012

The CIM Annual Canoe Trip was an amazing experience. It had been a long time since I had been around that many people with type 1 diabetes. It was such a valuable opportunity to learn from each other, to share tips and experiences, and really, just to have the opportunity to spend time with some incredible people who can relate to living life with Type 1 diabetes.
