WINTER YURT WEEKEND 2024

Killarney Provincial Park

George Lake
Killarney, Ontario

February 23-25, 2024

A weekend of adventure in the snow

A Support Crew Adventure

Connecting adults with Type 1 diabetes and our Support Crew in the backcountry.

Join us for an adventure with community, connection and continuing Type 1 diabetes education.

CIM Adventures help to connect people with Type 1 diabetes in the backcountry. The trips give you the chance to get away from the everyday hustle and bustle of your every day life; learn skills for taking diabetes into the wild; and step outside of your comfort zone into the place where magic happens. These programs are for veterans and new adventurers alike.

Experiential diabetes education

The outdoors is our classroom. The best way to learn is in the real world.

Connect with Type 1s

A weekend developed specifically for adults with T1D and their support crew in mind.

Watch the magic happen

We help make life with T1D just a little bit easier.

Logistics

Whether it’s your first or hundredth trip, we want to adventure with you.

Days will be spent cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, winter hiking or skating, with a hot lunch. We’ll spend the evenings alongside a campfire at our cozy yurts. We’ll be able to learn from one another about how to set ourselves up for success, managing our Type 1 diabetes in the backcountry.

This trip will cater to a wide range of skill levels and experience and will be limited in space. We will be accepting 10 participants with Type 1 Diabetes as well as Support Crew (those people (18+) in our lives who help make Type 1 diabetes a little bit easier, but who DON’T have Type 1).

Details about where to rent or borrow cross-country skis and snowshoes will be provided as the event gets closer. To learn more about CIM programs, click here .

Killarney Provincial Park

Overview

Spanning 645 square kilometres, this renowned wilderness area features the rugged beauty of Georgian Bay’s pink granite coast, the striking white quartzite ridges of the La Cloche Mountains, and more than 50 crystal-clear, sapphire lakes nestled amidst Jack Pine hills. The region’s breathtaking scenery has inspired many, including members of The Group of Seven like A.Y. Jackson, Franklin Carmichael, and A.J. Casson. Their admiration for this landscape was so profound that they successfully lobbied the Ontario government to designate it as a park.

I'm not super fit. I don't know if I'll be able to handle this event.

Of course you will! The CIM team are trained educators and adventure guides. We work hard to make sure that everyone experiences success, defined on your own terms. Whether that’s climbing a mountain, or just strolling to the trailhead, we’ll mould the experience to suit all ability levels. We’ll encourage you to step to the edge of your comfort zone, but we won’t push you off!

I have a special dietary need: celiac, dairy sensitivity, allergy, etc. Can the venue accommodate me?

We do our best to accommodate special dietary requests, and our team works closely with the venue to ensure they are aware of any food allergies or special diets in the group. If you have a special dietary concern, please be sure to let us know during the registration process so we can find out what accommodations or substitutions the venue is able to offer.

Will there be low supplies on site, or do I need to pack my own?

Low supplies will be plentiful, but it’s always a good idea to bring your own! We’ll supply juice boxes, glucose tabs, granola bars, etc. As always, if you have your own favourites, please bring them along! (Maybe they will become our favourites, too!)
